Circuit (airfield) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At an airfield, the circuit ("Pattern" in the USA) is a conventional standard path for coordinating air traffic that is taking off and landing, as opposed to a practice of so-called "straight in approaches" and "direct climb outs".
Airfield operators will set up circuits according to the runway in use, the local conventions for noise abatement or other ground features, and the current usage of the airfield.
The use of a circuit at airfields is for safety - rather than have aircraft flying around the field in a haphazard fashion, by using a circuit pilots will know where to expect other air traffic from, and be able to see it and avoid it.

 Circuit Planning
The reason for flying a circuit is to make your approach to a landing predictable for other traffic while making sure you reach a point in the sky for the final turn at a safe height, distance and speed - with an alternative landing area in mind.
You should be able to see the airfield's windsock(s) in order to decide the landing direction and the side on which to perform the circuit so that you are flying into the wind as much as possible in the latter stages and the landing.
As you approach the circuit, before you start it and the pace of life quickens, is a good time to perform the pre-landing checks.

Airfield lighting control systems have been developed to avoid incursions onto an active runway or taxiway, thereby reducing the likelihood of collisions between aircraft, especially during conditions of low visibility.
The airfield series circuit consists of a plurality of series-connected current isolation transformers, respective secondary windings of the transformers are connected to various load devices, such as lamps, but may also include devices such as microwave presence sensors.
A circuit produces a square wave at the cathode of D12 with a lower limit of +10 V and an upper limit of +20 V. During the positive phase of the square wave, current flows through D13 to develop a potential of approximately +18 V across capacitor C19.

At airports and airfields that are not too busy, a standard method of joining the traffic pattern for landing is in operation.
The circuit height is normally 1000ft above the airfield and the pilot fly's the legs at this height except the base and final.
Then descend in an s turn to circuit height and join in the crosswind leg from the dead side at 1000ft for crosswind and downwind leg.

 Cessna Course           Flying the Circuit
Most circuits are left hand but due to built up areas or terrain some airfields do have right hand patterns.
If for example your runway heading is 270 then if you was doing a left hand circuit then look to the compass 9 o clock position, the crosswind leg is 180 the downwind leg is 090 the 6 O clock position the base leg is north in the three o clock.
The side of the airfield the circuit is on is known as the live side and the side away from the circuit is known as the dead side.

 Airport - Information
A military airport is known as an airbase in North American terminology (other countries may use the term airfield or air station in current parlance or aerodrome in 1930s parlance).
Generally, this pattern is a circuit consisting of five "legs" that form a rectangle (two legs and the runway form one side, with the remaining legs each form another side).
Commercial airfields include one or more emergency vehicles and their crew that are specially equipped for dealing with airfield accidents, crew and passenger extractions, and the hazards of highly flammable airplane fuel.

Go around - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term arises from the traditional use of circuits at airfields—a landing aircraft will first join the circuit pattern and prepare for landing in an orderly fashion.
If for some reason the pilot decides not to land, he can simply fly back up to circuit height, and complete another circuit—in other words, go around again.
The term go-around is still used even for modern airliners, that do not use traditional circuit patterns for landing, although they are typically assigned a set path to follow in the event of a go around.
