Circuit Zandvoort is a motor racing circuit located near the town of Zandvoort, in the Netherlands, near the North Sea coast line.
Although there were some races at Zandvoort before WW II, a real circuit was not built until after the war, mainly designed by John Hugenholz.
In the history of the circuit, two fatal accidents have occurred: Piers Courage during the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix, and Roger Williamson died in 1973.

Zandvoort itself is one of the most popular beach resorts in Holland, partially due to its proximity to Amsterdam.
Zandvoort did not host a race in 1954, but did have one on June 19, 1955, just one week after the LeMans tragedy, when everyone else was cancelling races.
The Zandvoort win was one of five that year for Lauda who had now come back to racing a second time (the first time from life-threatening injuries and the second time from retirement) and won his third World Championship.

The circuit to the left was first used in 1939, and was around the streets of Zandvoort itself, and was partly a promotional tool to gain acceptance for a permanent circuit.
Noise pollution laws forced the shortening of the circuit from 2.642 miles to 1.565 miles, and a man-made sand dune was placed between the circuit and the town to reduce noise.
Zandvoort is on the coast, approximately 25km west of Amsterdam.

Circuit history from the official Web site: The name 'Terlamen' is derived from 'Terlaemen', the name of the local domain that is already quoted in 1293 and at the heart whereof the circuit has been constructed.
The circuit itself is built on a steep hillside, with the Paddock area and the Pit Straight located at the lowest elevation of the course.
This is also the circuit where Ferrari made a major public relations blunder in 2002 by ordering race leader Rubens Barrichello to pull aside in the final few meters of the Austrian Grand Prix to allow teammate Michael Schumacher to win a race which Barrichello had completely dominated all weekend long (Practice, Qualifying, and Race).

Another reason I was fascinated with Zandvoort is that I was interested in seeing its unusual setting, as I understood it was a seaside resort town and that the circuit ran amongst the dunes adjacent to the North Sea.
Zandvoort did manage to obtain a T1 license from the FIA, which permits Formula One teams to use it for testing, as they now use Kyalami and Estoril - other circuits waiting in the wings and looking to be awarded a Formula One race.
I bicycled to the right from the circuit entrance and in less than three minutes I was overlooking the North Sea on the bike path "duinsand", with the wine dark ocean on one side of me and the dunes of the Zandvoort circuit on the other side of me, both visible from the bike path.

In my opinion the new Zandvoort circuit owes a lot (if not all) to the Masters and the Philip Morris organization, so even if you object to their products some good did come from it, at least for the Dutch autosport fans.
The 1999 Masters on the new and demanding Zandvoort circuit was as always admission free and attracted almost 100,000 spectators over the weekend who had a great time despite the unpleasant weather.

The track has been lengthened from the old 2.900 km 'under a minute lap' to a modern 4.250 km circuit.

Zandvoort is obviously another circuit well suited to the new Audi A4 DTM: in both of Friday's test sessions the Audi drivers were setting the pace on the circuit along the North Sea coast of the Netherlands.
