The Circuit del Jarama is a 2.115- mile (3.1725 km) race course in Spain which hosted nine Formula One Spanish Grand Prix.
Designed by John Hugenholtz (who also created Zandvoort and Suzuka), the circuit was built in 1967 north of Madrid in arid scrub land.
Jarama hosted its last F1 race in 1981 when it was deemed too narrow for modern racing; its still holds occasional sports car and motorcycle races.

Unfortunately the funding of the construction proved to be its downfall and the circuit, with its curious dog-leg coming off the banking at one end, was closed soon afterwards although it is still there today, cracked and overgrown.
It was not until 1966 that the Catalans revived the old Montjuich Park circuit, as a response to the construction of the Jarama circuit near Madrid.
Jarama hosted the Grand Prix that year but an agreement was reached for Montjuich to hold the race in 1969.

 Grand Prix Racing - the whole story
When Formula 1 arrived in Jarama in July 1967 it was the first time Spain had hosted a Championship Grand Prix since Mike Hawthorn beat Fangio's Mercedes back in 1954.
A purpose built circuit designed by John Hugenholtz (also responsible for Zandvoort and Suzuka) was built on a small pocket of land in the arid scrub land north of Madrid.
Jarama staged a total of nine Grands Prix before the track was declared too narrow cars although it was never popular among the drivers.

The post-war circuit had been designed by John Hugenholtz, who later on was responsible for the Suzuka circuit in Japan and the Jarama circuit in Spain, but Zandvoort is regarded as his most inspired work.
There are apparently several versions of the circuit and I passed the rollerbladers a couple of times as I peddle up and glide down the graceful turns with their authentic Formula One red and white candy-striped "kerbing," hitting my apexes of course.
I bicycled to the right from the circuit entrance and in less than three minutes I was overlooking the North Sea on the bike path "duinsand", with the wine dark ocean on one side of me and the dunes of the Zandvoort circuit on the other side of me, both visible from the bike path.

THE historic Jarama circuit is set to be demolished and replaced by a state-of-the-art facility nearby in order to entice the Spanish Grand Prix back to Madrid.
The aim is for the circuit to be built be 2007, the year that the RACE celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Plans hinge on the current site being sold off, which means that Jarama will not be demolished until proposals for the new circuit have been approved.

Jarama, 18 miles north of the capital, has fallen into decline since the 1980s and redevelopment is impossible because it is surrounded by two housing estates and a golf course.
No map for the new track was available, but Azua said it would retain the spirit of the original Hans Hugenholtz-designed Jarama and possibly a major part of its layout.

Not to be outdone the Catalans resurrected their splendid circuit through Barcelona's Montjuich Park, which dated back to 1932.
The unpleasant accident at Montjuich in 1975 meant that from 1976 the Spanish GP was at Jarama every year and James Hunt won the 1976 race and Mario Andretti both the 1977 and 1978 races in his JPS Lotus.
By the early 1980s, however, Jarama was fading and the Royal Automobile Club of Spain seemed to be more interested in the golf course next to the circuit.

Vaig començar al 1998-99, temporada en la que tenia 11 anys, perquè al meu pare li agradava molt tot això del motor i el meu veí es va comprar un kart i vam anar a veure’l i, al final, doncs vaig acabar jo també embolicat en això.
Després, la final al circuit del Jarama, va aplegar a 35 pilots i va ser on va sortir bé i on sortien els dos últims pilots: Javier Villa i jo.
La conducció d’un kart a un monoplaça és semblant en quant a reaccions i tot això, però els monoplaces duen marxes, les proves són molt més grans, l’amplada dels circuits, com el de Montmeló, són molt més grans.

Pues el del palco, como el que oye llover, que él sí podía oír, pero no se mojaba, porque el tal palco está resguardado.

The circuit was travelled in opposite direction, but some corners (bottom hairpin, #17 on map) are just too tight, either way one looks at them.
I remember it was very very hot and the pics brought back many memories as I walked round the circuit the day before the practice.I cannot remember a F3 race the year I went but Luigi Taveri won the bike race on a 500 Honda.

Los pilotos catalanes llegan a la cita madrileña en un excelente estado de forma, como demostraron en la pasada carrera del Circuit de Catalunya (19 de mayo), donde se rozó el doblete con Codony en lo más alto del podio y Nogués ocupando la tercera plaza.
El circuito del Jarama es quizás el trazado más técnico del campeonato y esto me gusta, por lo que creo que podemos aspirar al máximo.
