 circuit riders
Earning fifteen dollars a year, being drenched with water, sore from the saddle and exhausted from the three to four hundred mile circuits they had to cover every two to six weeks, the circuit riding preachers of early America were a faithful, strong group of young men, who were committed to their ministry.
A typical circuit could be from 200 to 500 miles in circumference and it would take a circuit rider about four weeks to complete the round.
Another rider, Freeborn Garrettson, wrote "I was pursued by the wicked, knocked down and left almost dead on the highway, my face scarred and bleeding, and then imprisoned." It is no wonder that nearly half of the circuit riders died before they were thirty.

"The Methodist circuit rider was basically the pastor for multiple satellite churches," Finke told CT. "They tried to start up satellite congregations as quickly and as cheaply as possible.
When the circuit rider was not there during the week, the satellite had a class leader or layperson who kept things going.
Methodists used that approach to become one of the largest religious groups in the United States, moving from "less than 2.5 percent of church adherents in 1776 to more than 34.2 percent in 1850," Finke wrote in a 2004 article for the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.

Theology Today - Vol 34, No. 4 - January 1978 - BOOK REVIEW - Dictionary of American Religious Biography
It is serviceable because of article design, layout, and type; scholarly because of selection, quality of narrative, and bibliographical recommendations.
Four hundred twenty-five American religious figures are fitted into 543 pages, persons ranging from "leathery circuit riders to pallid philosophers, from sectaries and dreamers to social activists and cosmic-minded citizens." The volume sacrifices a measure of in-depth treatment in order to provide a greater coverage of persons, but the quality of the articles is excellent.
Thus, whether one wishes biographical facts, bibliography, or an interpretation of the leading figure, there is no difficulty in finding it.
