Circuit switching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunications, a circuit switching network is one that establishes a dedicated circuit (or channel) between nodes and terminals before the users may communicate.
Circuit switching can be relatively inefficient because capacity is wasted on connections which are set up but are not in continuous use (however momentarily).
Circuit switching contrasts with packet switching which splits traffic data (for instance, digital representation of sound, or computer data) into chunks, called packets, that are routed over a shared network.

Packet switching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This contrasts with the other principal paradigm, circuit switching, which sets up a dedicated connection between the two nodes for their exclusive use for the duration of the communication.
Circuit switched networks, such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), also perform routing to find paths for circuits over which large amounts of data can be sent without continually repeating the complete destination address.
Packet switching influenced the development of the Actor model of concurrent computation in which messages sent to the same address may be delivered in an order different from the order in which they were sent.

 Packet switching
Circuit Switching is ideal when data must be transmitted quickly, must arrive in sequencing order and at a constant arrival rate.
The inputs to the switch are the inputs to the elements in the first column, and the outputs of the last column are the outputs from the switch.
The knockout switch is a fully connected architecture which attempts to combine the implementation simplicity of input queuing (buffer complexity is linear in the number of ports) with the throughput performance of output queuing (permitted input load and saturation throughput both approaching 100%).

 Switching technology
In circuit switching, resources remain allocated during the full length of a communication, after a circuit is established and until the circuit is terminated and the allocated resources are freed.
During circuit establishment, the set of switches and links on the path between the sender and the receiver is determined and messages are exchanged on all the links between the two end hosts of the communication in order to make the resource allocation and build the routing tables.
The circuit identifier (a range of frequencies in FDM or a time slot position in a TDM frame) is changed by each switch at forwarding time so that switches do not need to have a complete knowledge of all circuits established in the network but rather only local knowledge of available identifiers at a link.

The beauty of packet switching is that if I need a lot of packets or a few, I can have just what I need, with all the of the intelligence of the network running at my house and at some server, but almost none of it at the phone company that connects us together.
Circuit switching, on the other hand, is a network that knows what it is doing: It connects telephones to telephones.
Circuit switching inherently gives you all the advantage of on-demand, like the ability to view a show when you like, to fast-forward, stop, or reverse it.

 Switching Principles
There are three types of switching used in networks today: circuit switching, used in voice networks; packet switching, used in data networks; and cell relay, now being deployed for both voice and data transmission.
Circuit switching is not an efficient method for routing any kind of data, whether it is digital voice or user data.
The circuit is wasted much of the time because no transmission is using the bandwidth of the circuit 100 percent of the time.

Circuit switching is the most familiar technique used to build a communications network.
After completion of the connection, a signal confirming circuit establishment (a connect signal in the diagram) is returned; this flows directly back to node A with no search delays since the circuit has been established.
After data transfer, the circuit is disconnected; a simple disconnect phase is included after the end of the data transmission.

Message Switching   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Message lengths are slightly longer than they are in circuit switching, after establishment of the circuit, since header information must be included with each message; the header includes information identifying the destination as well as other types of information.
Most message switched networks do not use dedicated point-to-point links and therefore a call must be set-up using a circuit switched network.
Although message switching is still used for electronic mail and telex transmission, it has largely been replaced by packet switching (in fact, most electronic mail is carried using message switching with the links between message switches provided by packet or circuit-switched networks).

Circuit switching is a very basic concept that has been used by telephone networks for more than 100 years.
The call is routed through the switch at your local carrier to the party you are calling.
While circuit switching keeps the connection open and constant, packet switching opens a brief connection -- just long enough to send a small chunk of data, called a packet, from one system to another.

ARPANET - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Packet switching, now the dominant basis for both data and voice communication worldwide, was a new and important concept in data communications.
Previously, data communications was based on the idea of circuit switching, as in the old typical telephone circuit, where a dedicated circuit is tied up for the duration of the call and communication is only possible with the single party on the other end of the circuit.
With packet switching, a system could use one communication link to communicate with more than one machine by assembling data into packets.

6.2 Circuit switching in the Internet
The first is Optical Burst Switching -- OBS -- (Section 6.3), in which a router at the edge of the network queues packets up to a threshold and then establishes a circuit with an explicit or implicit connection release time (also known as a burst).
In this respect, TCP Switching is similar to IP Switching (Section 6.2.7), in which flows trigger the establishment of ATM virtual circuits.
This use of a hierarchy of circuits is similar to the one proposed in Chapter 5.

MRV Communications, Inc. - Ethernet Circuit
Traditional Ethernet switches for corporate Local Area Networks (LANs) are designed to forward frames, but are incapable of treating a stream of frames as belonging to a specific flow of information (a circuit).
Once the circuit is defined, actions and procedures are performed based on a database of circuit entries held internally within the switch’s hardware.
When the Ethernet Circuit technology is extended into the entire access network and backbone, service providers can see additional benefits, including better use of technician’s time, and operational cost savings from avoiding lost revenue from inactivated services and the need to purchase costly new systems.

 Packet Switching
Packet switching is favored over circuit switching for many different reasons.
It is more reliable than circuit switching because if a particular circuit in the network should fail, the routers in the network simploy route data units over different circuits, taking a different route altogether.
If a circuit fails in the middle of a transmission, the entire connection must be released and a new one established, which means the conversation must start over again (think of being disconnected from a telephone call; the whole process of connecting must be repeated).
