Topic: Circulus

In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

Guardian Unlimited | Arts Friday Review | Circulus, Britain's number one medieval folk band
Their clothes went out of fashion 500 years ago, but Circulus are playing some of the hippest venues in the country.
Circulus, a septet who can lay claim to being Britain's foremost medieval-influenced progressive psychedelic folk band, are having their photograph taken.
He used to be in Circulus, but was, he claims, ejected for failing to believe in fairies - a problem in a band whose big number is called Power to the Pixies.

 [ RoadBurn |Circulus Studio Report ]
Circulus began in 1997 and have waited many years for the opportunity to record a full lenght album.
Emerging from in and around the London area, Circulus plays a unique firebrand style of progressive, acid influenced folk-rock, and can't be compared to any of the bands on the label's roster.
And Circulus' stunning debut is a strong contender for album of the year.

Average spacing of scale circuli and average rate of circulus formation were significantly and positively correlated with average growth rate among groups of juvenile and maturing coho salmon and thus could provide estimates of growth between age groups and seasons.
Circulus spacing is potentially useful for comparing ocean growth rates of salmon in the ocean.
If circulus spacing is a reliable indicator of growth rate, then seasonal changes in growth rate should be tracked by changes in the spacing of circuli laid down at the scale margin.

Michael explains the temporal distortion that is "Circulus mean time" and asks if Kevin has eaten: "Nah man, I've beaten but not eaten!" he says, brushing his hair away from a Rizla he is about to seal.

Guardian Unlimited | Arts features | Tom Cox on his relationship with Circulus
Circulus, who are undoubtedly the best psychedelic neo-medieval folk rock band in Britain, have been breaking my heart now for seven years, and could not, by any stretch of the imagination, be described as 'normal'.
Circulus aren't quite like my other friends, many of whom have children, mortgages, 9-5 jobs and waistlines of more than 30 inches.
The typical Circulus fan is hard to pinpoint, but could loosely be summed up as the sort of long-haired, living-too-late drifter you tend to see sitting on a wall near Greenwich market, rolling a cigarette unhurriedly, possibly examining a rare medieval artefact picked up in an otherwise unexciting charity shop.

Circulus play a wonderful mixture of pop, rock, acid, folk, pagan and psychedelia.
You may say that Circulus are stuck in the past, but exactly this is Circulus' strong point.
Highlight of the record is Swallow, a hit by Jade in the 70s, with Circulus being able to organise the original singer Marian Segal to add some contributions.

It has the potential to be a very silly album, but the songwriting and musicianship is of such a high order that Circulus have managed to manoeuvre themselves into a place that is one step removed from anything you'll have heard before.
But that would be a disservice -- there is the kernel of something highly innovative in Circulus' music that comes from the fusion of their musical influences.
Circulus were brought to my attention last year when they were mentioned in a book written by a friend of theirs.

Collectively known as “Circulus,” these peach-fuzzed artistes spill gallons of patchouli oil over candles already burning too brightly.
The excesses of Amon Düül II’s Phallus Dei are fully indulged; what results is a superfluous mess of a record that comes across with all the savoir faire of a seat-splitting fart in the midst of a bridal shower tea party.
But Circulus, who offer the most convincing proof that Rick Wakeman was never cool, shouldn’t even be allowed to pick up after Bytor’s snow dog.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Mitre
As regards shape, there is such difference between the mitre of the eleventh century and that of the twentieth that it is difficult to recognize the same ornamental head-covering in the two.
Elaborate mitres of this kind had not only an ornamental band (circulus) on the lower edge, but a similar ornamental band (titulus) went vertically over the middle of the horns.
In the fourteenth century this form of mitre began to be distorted in shape.

I mean, I was listening to Circulus for the first time just tonight, and despite all the silly costumes or whatever, they are fantastic musicians and songwriters, and that moog nonsense they've got going on under all the sackbuts and so forth is just superb.
There's a fair chance that the people involved in Circulus are not, actually, utter carrots.
That said, i did find them to be an appalling act, their (and anyone elses for that matter) technical competence is worthy, but not something i can get too excited about in musicians.

s soon as I saw a picture of Circulus bedecked in their cod-medieval finery I knew what they were—The Darkness but with the pomp metal replaced by acid folk.
Or, worse than this, they’re sincere but utterly tasteless and lacking in the will and imagination to create something genuinely strange, something that could strike the heart through.
Despite this, Circulus have one enormous plus point in one of the best British drummers I have ever heard—heavy, hypnotic, funky and varied without having to overplay to demonstrate it: Bill Ward meets Charles Hayward meets the best of the faux-funk KPM library music breaks.

Hints of mannered prog surface in the keyboards and the instrumentals, notably also in track 9, which opens up their song to nod towards what the Harvest label might have produced thirty years ago, mixing pastoralia with more of a punchy synthesized songcraft.
This is a direction in which Circulus would be wise to explore, as a Hawkwind-meets-Steeleye blend is one of the few that have not yet been revived by the neo-hippie generation.
I just have finished giving a first listen the the Circulus album "The Lick on the Tip of an Envelope Yet to Be Sent", and all I can say is brilliant.

See, while the lyrical content here - fairies, scarecrows, the celebration of passing season and nature - might be typical folkish fare, Circulus' combining of trilling recorders, traditional instrumentation, the use of both percussion and modern drum kit, guitar noise and perhaps a hint of electronics, makes this music feel timeless.
