However, a small number of contemporary Jews are choosing not to circumcise their sons.
They are assisted by a small number of Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis, and have developed a welcoming ceremony that they call the Brit Shalom ("Covenant [of] Peace") for such children.

The other times the participants were asked about their decision to circumcise or not circumcise the child included: while in the hospital (n = 33 [22.3%]); in the delivery room (n = 21 [14.2%]); and during the infant's routine checkup (n = 4 [2.7%]).

I guess what I need is some advice from other Jewish parents who decided not to circumcise their sons, if they had ''alternative'' ceremonies in leui of a normal bris, and how they may have dealt with family pressures and general comments about their decisions.
If you circumcise your son, he can choose a religious life or not (there is no orthodox or conservative wings that I know that will accept a person without this covenant).
I had previously decided not to circumcise my soon-to-be born child if it is a boy, but am not sure what to do in the face of this new study.

All 30 students claimed that they would not circumcise their daughters and most found it absurd and irrational that I would even ask this question.
Judging from this small survey I believe that a majority of American parents that give consent to circumcise feel pressured by cultural influences, and are uneducated about the procedure itself.
Most of the students believed that the doctor would automatically know to circumcise their child, "after all this is America." This finding leads me to believe that the American Academy of Pediatrics should install regulations that require all physicians to educated patents about the risks, taboos and alternatives to circumcision.

But I do respect that many people choose to circumcise and feel that 'being like daddy' or for cosmetic reasons are also valid reasons to circumcise.
We were not going to circumcise my son initially for the very issues you mention, pain and that my son had been through enough.
And that parents who choose to circumcise are somehow not thinking things through or are thinking things through and making a bad choice unless there is some medical reason for it.
