After the Black Hand leaders were convicted of counterfeiting in 1910, Nicholas Morello and his step-brothers Vincenzo and Ciro "The Artichoke King" Terranova, took control of New York's largest Mafia family.
Though the elder brother Vincenzo was the man who introduced Ciro to the Black Hand, the younger Terranova was to surpass his brother in terms of power and influence.
Under the reign of Saietta and Joe Morello, Ciro built up numerous political contacts who made it far easier for him to conduct his business – that business being the sale of what he called the "White Stuff", cocaine.

Terranova’s half-brother Giuseppe Morello joined the powerful combine and the gang moved their headquarters to an infamous building that the police would dub the “murder stable.” It was alleged that the Terranova / Morello gang murdered 23 rival hoodlums there between 1900 and 1917.
Rosalia’s husband was murdered shortly after Ciro’s birth after which she married a man named Morello.
Charges against Terranova were dismissed on the “ground that testimony against him was given by co-conspirators and accomplices and that outside corroboration necessary under New York law was missing.”

When he got to the U.S., he became involved in racketeering and enforcing for the Morello Gang of the Lower East Side, a gang let by Iganzio Saietta and Ciro Terranova.
The leadership of the Morello gang was on shakey ground, Saietta had gone to prison along with a few other top officials and Terranova had struck it rich by cornering the market on all artichokes that came into the U.S. Masseria saw his chance to take over.
There were several attempts on Masseria's life, including an assassination attempt on him by Peter Morello, the former leader of the Morello Gang in an attempt to regain power.
