The cirque de Gavarnie is a large rock amphitheater, situated at the border of France and Spain.
The French part of the cirque de Gavarnie is part of the Pyrenees National Park, the Spanish side is part of the National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido.
The Brèche de Roland is a part of the classical route to Monte Perdido from Gavarnie (known as such a route since the 19th century, shortly after the north face/Tuquerouye route was left aside because of its difficulty).

The dent in the mountain is over 200m deep.

The road from Lourdes to Gavarnie follows the Gorge de Luz on a gentle uphill slope through a collection of powedered ski resorts.
The Cirque de Gavarnie is a natural rock amphitheater, a colossal mass of peaks, hollowed out and large enough that if it were to be used as an arena, it would hold 15 million spectators.

The Cirque de Gavarnie is a Great sheer wall, streaked with waterfall, about 300 high.
You can take a path up the right hand side of the valley from the church at Gavarnie, which gives good views of the cirque and the waterfall that spins from the top on the trail to the Brèche de Roland.
There is superb walking all around Luz and Gavarnie and on the way into Gavarnie you will find by the roadside a statue of Count Henry Russell, a mountaineer and noted eccentric.
