Here, we investigate the phylogeography of host races of the tephritid fly Tephritis conura from sympatric, parapatric and allopatric populations of Cirsium heterophyllum and Cirsium oleraceum (Asteraceae) in Europe, for addressing the age and direction, and the geographic context of host-race formation.
oleraceum, suggesting that the latter is the derived race.
oleraceum during range expansion or that heterophyllum flies went extinct in an area where oleraceum flies persisted (followed by re-immigration).

In my projects I apply population genetic methods (microsatellites and sequencing), the phytogeographical approach as well as ecological experiments in the field and greenhouse.
In my Diploma thesis and a following three months project I worked on the phylogeography of the perennial thistles Cirsium heterophyllum and Cirsium oleraceum which was influenced by the last glaciation.
Our focus was on the possible impact of the two hosts on the evolution of their parasite, the fruit fly Tephritis conura, which divided into two distinct host races (publication in process).

On higher elevations grey alder (Alnus incana) is typical, going furhter down alder (Alnus glutinosa) becomes more common.
Characteristic tall herbaceous plantd on the river bank are: large yellow ox-eye (Telekia speciosa), cabbage thistle (Cirsium oleraceum) or white butterbur (Petasites albus).
In the widening valley on the river side bushy willow communities and galleries appeas gradually, which become dominant in the flood plains of the slowing Tisza.
