Cisitalia (the name comes from Consorzio Industriale Sportive Italia) was founded by Piero Dusio, an ex-footballer who had become a rich industrialist through the success of his own firm, CISI (textiles, banks, sports goods, hotels).
His idea was to create a race series using his to be cheap single seaters, with mainly Fiat parts (1100 engine and 500 suspension).
In addition to the new Formula 1 single-seater, they were planning to build a 2000 cc Grand Sport 5-6 seater, an 11 HP universal tractor, and a small turbine.

Designed in 1946 by the Italian car designer and coach builder Pinin Farina (who later changed his name to Pininfarina), the two-seater Cisitalia "202" GT was an aesthetic and technical achievement that transformed postwar automobile body design.
Building on aerodynamic studies developed for racing cars, the Cisitalia offers one of the most accomplished examples of coachwork (the automobile's body) conceived as a single shell.
Before the Cisitalia, the prevailing approach followed by automobile designers when defining a volume and shaping the shell of an automobile was to treat each part of the body as a separate, distinct element—a box to house the passengers, another for the motor, and headlights as appendages.

Not surprisingly, Cisitalia's first cars were single-seat 1100-cc racers based on cheap and commonly available Fiat mechanical components.
The first two-seat Cisitalias were lightweight racing coupes and roadsters with aluminum bodies bearing rear fender skirts and large tailfins.
Meantime, Cisitalia 202 Gran Sport production was slated to resume in Italy under new ownership, and did, but the cars were basically cobbled-up amalgams of special bodies and workaday chassis and drivetrains.

Their first racer was called the D46 (it was produced in 1946) - a car with a space frame chassiis that was as structurally advanced as anything racing at the time complemented by many parts from Fiat road cars including a tuned 1100 cc Fiat engine.
