 CIST BURIAL AT Ardra
The discovery of human bones in a stone-lined grave or cist was reported by Supt. Vincent Duffy of Kilkenny Garda Station on 12th May. The discovery was made earlier in the day by Telecom Eireann employees in the course of digging a trench to lay cable pipes.
The grave was examined and excavated by the National Museum of Ireland on 13th and 14th May. The cist was uncovered in the town land of Ardra on the northern side of a low rise on the western side of the river Dinin.
Cist burials are usually found by accident either in gravel digging or while ploughing.

The Howick Project: Bronze Age Cist Cemetery   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The reason bone fragments survived in Cist 2 was due to the cist slabs being made from whinstone which has an alkaline bias, unlike the acidic sandstone used for the other cists.
Another Bronze Age cist cemetery was discovered on the opposite promontory to the south of the Howick Burn by antiquarians during the nineteenth century.
One of these cists had rock art on the underside of the capstone and a fragmentary pottery vessel was also found.

The cist grave shown in the Louth County Museum comes from the Tankardsrock area, and was uncovered while builders were constructing a labouror's house. They had brought in a digger and while digging a trench around the house came across the cist which had the remains of a partially cremated skeleton and a food vessel.
In 1998 the staff and friends of the Museum removed the cist and its contents and brought it to the County Museum where it is now on display.
These cist graves lasted into the beginning of the Iron Age, and with their abandonment the Neolithic was in its decline.

 1993 Cist Burials
Tomb Z.1 is a cist burial chamber measuring 0.71 m x 2.03 m.
Morphological and metric analysis of Grave Z.1 skeletal material revealed the presence of a minimum number of four individuals; one adult male, one subadult female between the ages of 18-20, a subadult of age six to twelve and another subadult of age one to three.
It is unlikely, given the almost worldwide ritualistic avoidance of uncovered or exposed decaying corpses and the lack of chemical preservation, that any of the four individuals from tomb Z. I were left in an open grave for an extended period of time.

Stone Pages Archaeo News: Finely decorated slabs found in a Scottish cairn
Unfortunately the cist had also been robbed, although a few rim sherds of food vessel were recovered.
Both the perforations and the weathering on both sides of the two decorated side slabs of the cist suggest that both stones were once freestanding or open to the elements; their subsequent incorporation into the cist has almost certainly preserved the apparent freshness of the decoration in any case.
Close by are the remains of a chambered cairn that incorporates similar sandstone slabs that have been imported onto the site from outcropping sources in the near vicinity and it is possible that the slabs within the cistĀ could have come from that locality and been re-used.
