The fate of an accused person or entity is placed in the hands of six to twelve citizens instead of the military, politicians, or "experts." The system relies on individuals to become a "jury of peers" in order to fairly and accurately weigh the facts and law to decide a case.
A: Every citizen is eligible for jury duty in the United States.
Continue the discussion of the importance of serving on juries to allow everyone a fair trial in front of a jury of peers who are a true cross section of society.

 Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy
The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy has sued a state agency because the environmental study it did for the proposed Minnesota Steel Industries mining and steel mill in northern Minnesota did not seriously consider the project's effects on global warming pollution.
The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy and four other energy and environmental groups filed a brief this week pointing out that the Big Stone II proponents did not take into account new Minnesota laws when they were deciding whether to build their coal-fired power plant.
The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy released maps and data bases on more than 300 Minnesota bridges which will allow citizens to become informed on the state of their bridges and the votes of their representatives on transportation issues.

To implement this policy, the General Assembly declares: (1) It is the intent of this Act to protect the citizen’s right to know; and (2) The provisions for exceptions to the open meeting requirements shall be strictly construed against closed meetings.
As such, the Center recommends to public bodies that when a question of whether or not an advisory committee is subject to the Open Meetings Act arises, it is always better to err on the side of transparency.
