Topic: Citizenry

In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

  Al-Ahram Weekly | Editorial | A safeguard for all
Citizenry is supposed to provide an exit from such dilemmas.
Citizenry is the measure of the legal and political standing of the individual.
For citizenry to mean anything citizens must all share the same rights and obligations before the law.

 International New Citizenry Conference
Our objective for this event is to discuss the concept of new citizenry which, as we understand it, must overcome the barriers of academic development if any practical implementation is to be possible, and so we have invited a number of guest speakers from well-known social and university milieux.
From the wide international viewpoint of human rights, new citizenry refers to a universal status whereby we all choose the place in which we prefer to live, with no restrictions caused by ethnic concerns or nationality.
Citizenry and urban space, citizenry and migration, citizenry and equality – these are the various angles from which we will present a basic concept, an instrument for achieving equality, and a field requiring widespread participation and decisive action on the part of public bodies.

 Land of the Puppet People
America is the land of plenty, where waistlines expand, stress increases, mental problems grow, work hours increase and vehicles get bigger and bigger, a land addicted to the devil’s excrement, like a heroin user injecting fl gold into its ever thirsty veins, becoming a violent, warmongering junkie when the perpetual case of cold turkey arises.
Using the naiveté and ignorance of the citizenry to its advantage, the military industrial energy complex will claim to fight for freedom, democracy and an end to tyranny, again jumping on the fictional war on terror bandwagon to excuse its offensive attacks for imperial aspirations and control of the world’s remaining oil fields.
When the drums of war commence their thunderous beat the inbred thirst for bloodshed and violence is unleashed, with the population instinctively aware that the Empire’s addiction to war will soon be satisfied.

Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility
This is the type of political regime where the citizenry carries the greatest burden of governing.
They must choose who is to govern them, judge their performance, and directly participate in a variety of ways in the process of government itself.
Local political life is crucial to the fostering of a self-governing citizenry and thus to the overall shape of the politics and the policies we pursue.

 SUPERPOWER CITIZENRY
So if you are largely comfortable and untroubled by your superpower citizenry, then what I have to say may sound impolite, ungrateful and at times unpatriotic.
My third of four guidelines for superpower citizenry is that in addition to speaking out, or rather as a precursor to speaking out, Christians in a superpower need to be a city on the Hill; need to be modeling their vision; need to be living as if the kingdom of God really is at hand.
And the difficult, guilt-inducing, troublesome truth is that the superpower citizenry from which I benefit is a result of our country's domination of the world --a domination we are intent on maintaining.

John Zaller - Perversities in the Ideal of the Informed Citizenry
The essence of this venerable ideal is that citizens are obligated to keep themselves sufficiently informed about public affairs that they can judge candidates and issues on their substantive merits rather than on the basis of whim or partisanship.
Taylor believed that the issue segments he proposed would both inform the citizenry and increase their interest in the political process.
For the vast bulk of the citizenry, Murphy Brown and horse-race journalism are what good political coverage looks like -- the modern day equivalent of a torchlight parade followed by a speech.

Tsunami Victims Benefit Most from U.S. Citizenry
No, their authority was to be concerned with things such as; treaties with foreign governments, providing for the defense for our citizens, protecting the citizens’ rights to life, liberty, and property...and other stuff like that.
So, it continually amazes me when the citizenry of this country act on the belief that the government should collect roughly 1/3 of our paychecks to spend on that which often doesn't concern the laborer from which the taxed income is dependent or which could be better taken care of by the citizenry themselves.
There were two glaring examples of this in the news today, one of which is the emergency aid being allocated to the victims of the Tsunami and one has to do with the insolvency of the United Airlines pension fund.

It Is An Armed Citizenry That I Fear
Thus, my phrase, "an armed citizenry," and the phrase which you fear has been omitted, are in fact synonymous.
The purpose of the armed citizenry, as properly pointed out in the amendment you keep insisting we cite correctly, is to preserve "the security of a free state." To interpret that as meaning "the overthrow the government of The United States of America" is disingenuous.
If you wish to live in a country where the citizenry is disarmed, then you do not want to live in the America envisioned by our founding fathers.

Why We Need An Informed Citizenry
But it's not a very big step from there to suggesting that we should forget all this talk of democracy and leave the difficult art of governing in the hands of our betters.
The truth is, for our democracy to work it needs not just an engaged citizenry, but an informed one.
Living in a democracy may be a basic right, but it is also a privilege, and it is one that must be earned by living up to the fondest dreams of our founders for a well-educated and knowledgeable citizenry.

 Reclaiming Public Education
While not claiming to have the only correct definition of "democracy," I think it is self-government by a sovereign citizenry that exercises its power in communities, statehouses, and the nation's capital.
However, if the citizenry can't determine the mission of institutions such as public schools, self-rule is seriously undermined.
The citizenry is not just a means to ends that have already been determined elsewhere in the political system.

I think of this idea of judging people's fitness to make decisions for themselves based on the accurate information they have not only because this project is about journalism and facts but also because of a quote that is often bandied about.
Jefferson's writings that does relate to an informed citizenry is in his letter to Dr. Price of 8 January, 1789:
I simply mean not to idealize a form of democracy that has never existed or, if it did, only for a brief moment.

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword.
And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry.
Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so.
