While the extended propagation characteristics on this band was of considerable interest to radio hobbyists, interference from distant stations limited the usefulness of CB for its original purpose.
To simplify selection of an operating frequency, Citizens' band radio is a two-way radio service that consists of 40 numbered radio frequency channels in the HF spectrum from 26.965 to 27.405 MHz, with channels generally spaced 10 kHz apart.
Located between the CB band and the amateur radio 10-meter band from 27.410 to 27.990 MHz, many freebanders believe it to be a quiet and under utilized part of the spectrum.

 Citizens' band radio
Citizens' band radio (CB) is a system of short distance communication between individuals on a selection of 40 channels within the single 27 MHz (11 meter) band.
Both GMRS and Amateur Radio do require licenses and Amateur (Ham) Radio also requires the passing of exams before a license and call sign is issued by the FCC.
CB is still a popular hobby in many countries though its meaning as a method of communication has diminished recently, due to new developments such as the internet and mobile phones.

When you listen to a radio station and the announcer says, "You are listening to 91.5 FM WRKX The Rock!," what the announcer means is that you are listening to a radio station broadcasting an FM radio signal at a frequency of 91.5 megahertz, with FCC-assigned call letters of WRKX.

Citizen's Band refers to a range of radio frequencies that lie between the short-wave broadcast signals and the 10-meter Amateur radio bands.
HAM radio operators have to pass a written and practical application test, and their radios may employ the use a variety of power amplifiers that extend the reach of their radios.
One curious thing about CB radios -- or for that matter any radio -- is the nature of "ground plane." Ground plane is the area under the reflective area of an antenna -- imagine that the antenna is the pole in an invisible patio umbrella.

Howstuffworks "How does a CB radio antenna work?"
A citizens band (CB) radio antenna is a device designed to do two things: It captures radio-frequency signals that are then converted to electrical signals by the receiver, and it takes electrical signals from the transmitter and converts them into radio-frequency signals.
In an ideal situation, the impedances of line and antenna match perfectly, and 100 percent of the electrical energy sent to the antenna is converted to radio energy and radiated into the atmosphere.
In a less than ideal case, when the impedances aren't perfectly matched, some of the electrical energy sent to the antenna won't be converted to radio energy, but will be reflected back down the feed-line.

It is largely coterminous with nationality, although it is possible to have a nationality without being a citizen (i.e., be legally subject to a state and entitled to its protection without having rights of political participation in it); it is also possible to have political rights without being a national of a state.
In recent years, some intergovernmental organizations have extended the concept and terminology associated with citizenship to the international level, where it is applied to the totality of the citizens of their constituent countries combined.
In some Commonwealth countries resident citizens of other Commonwealth countries are entitled to political rights, e.g., the right to vote in local and national elections and in some cases even the right to stand for election.
