Citrus production in most of Europe continues to decline, although the clementines produced by Spain are increasing in popularity among consumers.
Citrus production is often cut short in many areas by outbreaks of bacteria known as Xanthomonas axonopodis, or Citrus canker, which cause unsightly lesions on all parts of the plant, affecting tree vitality and early drop of fruit.
Citrus canker affects all varieties of citrus trees, and recent outbreaks in Australia, Brazil and the United States have slowed citrus production in parts of those countries.

Citrus production threatened, prices due to rise
The Florida citrus industry is struggling to recover from a string of disease and natural disaster, but with production forecasts down and likely to fall further, and with no carry-over supplies from last season, it looks likely that food manufacturers will not escape increased prices for citrus ingredients.
The industry's latest concern is the spread of citrus canker, a disease first detected in Miami in October 1995, which was in the process of being eradicated when last year's hurricanes caused it to be spread across the region.
Yet while citrus production is under threat as a result of the pressures on the industry, citrus consumption appears to be on the rise, as it fits in with the general trend towards growing consumer awareness about nutrition and health.
