Fortunately Simak's talents were up to the task, and whilst this book does not reach the heady heights of 'City' it is still a well written, entertaining SF novel - well worth tracking down a copy.
A lesser writer than Simak cramming this much story into 191 pages would have produced something on the verge of unreadable.
This story can seem a little disjointed at times, as so much happens from so many directions in such a short book.

City will likely be Simak's hallmark book, but there are many highly notable such as Time and Again and Cemetery World.
Clifford was one of those great, innovative SF writers that the 1950s had in abundance (although he began selling SF in the early 1930's).
Simak loved to use 'doors between dimensions' as a device to allow his characters to move about the universe.

Obscure books -- not City, which is still on my "to acquire and read" list.
To remind you, a 1 star rating means they're for die-hard Simak fans only (or also suitable for people who find them on sale for a dime each).
To sum up, my advice is that if you find yourself facing a pile of old Simak novels, this is the one to read.
