The City Lights Bookstore, in the North Beach section of San Francisco, California, is an independent bookstore specializing in poetry and a small press publisher of fiction, essays, memoirs, translations, poetry, and books on social and political issues.
While City Lights has the typical sections for new releases, fiction, mystery, and reference, it also has sections for commodity aesthetics, stolen continents, muckraking, and class war.
Co-founded by poet/painter Lawrence Ferlinghetti, City Lights is a landmark independent bookstore and publisher that specializes in world literature, the arts, and progressive politics.

"City Lights" was a very challenging movie for Chaplin, as it posed a few problems he had to overcome somehow.
"City Lights" is filled with such social studies of the then-modern society and the impact it had on American citizens, and Chaplin was always trying to find a way to comment on the situation with a very humanitarian note, as well as a good wink at times.
Image Entertainment has prepared "City Lights" for release on this DVD and within seconds it becomes evident that this is the best the movie has ever looked.

She mistakenly thinks he's a wealthy man, and that impression is re-enforced when he provides her with the money to pay her rent and travel abroad to have an operation to cure her blindness.
City Lights' ending is well known and has justly been described as one of the most perfect conclusions in the history of cinema.
As compelling as City Lights' dramatic element is, the film is still primarily a comedy, and features several instances of Chaplin at his best.

Chaplin takes himself a little more seriously in City Lights, and the results are spectacular.
The musical score which Chaplin composed for the film was one of the many highlights, and even though Charlie's performance is much more dramatic than usual in some scenes, the hilarious comedy for which he is known and loved is still abundant.
City Lights is so well made that it is one of the very few movies in which the obvious flaws can be gladly overlooked.

Chaplin halted production on City Lights to weigh his options, and, when he resumed work several months later, he stunned his Hollywood peers by deciding to keep the film in a silent form.
"City Lights is synchronized [to a musical score] and certain sound effects are part of the comedy, but it is a non-dialogue picture because I preferred that it be that." For many, the film that resulted is a finely wrought balance of pathos and comedy, the very quintessence of Chaplin.
