It is in the Local Government Area of the City of Boroondara.
City of Boroondara achieves the highest score of all Melbourne municipal areas on the SEIFA index of disadvantage compiled by the Australian Bureau of statistics (the lower the score, the more disadvantage).
Kew was proclaimed a town on 8 December 1910, and a city on 10 March 1921.

The Minister for Planning and Local Government, Robert Maclellan, today welcomed the support of Boroondara City Council for a wider diversity of housing choices in the municipality.
“I am pleased to learn that Boroondara City Council is comfortable with the decisions of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and that the council is now taking a harder line in requiring better site analysis plans at the time of application,” he said.
The Minister urged Boroondara City Council to continue working with the Department of Infrastructure and the local community through the council’s resident initiative program.

Boroondara Youth Brass rehearses on Wednesday nights under the baton of Danny van Bergen, who plays Horn in the senior band.

The campaign, launched by the City of Boroondara in late 2001, involves removing graffiti from public assets within 24 hours of it being reported and offering residents free cans of paint and graffiti removal kits to remove graffiti from private properties.
According to the Director Works and Governance at the City of Boroondara, John Nevins, this decisive action by residents demonstrates the community need for graffiti to be tackled in an effective and proactive way.

The Boroondara Soirée, a bimonthly poetry reading held at the Hawthorn Town Hall on the second Friday of every second month, has been running for 10 years in various guises.

The Executive Director of Heritage Victoria made a recommendation on 11 August that the site had local cultural heritage significance and that it should therefore be included in the City of Boroondara’s local planning scheme (heritage overlay).
Following the advertisement of this recommendation, written submissions were received from the National Trust, the Boroondara Residents Action Group (BRAG), the City of Boroondara and VicTrack.
On 1 December, a special committee of the Heritage Council heard submissions from representatives of the Executive Director, Heritage Victoria, the National Trust, BRAG and the City of Boroondara.

 VPN - Boroondara Libraries Receive $42,500 Grants
The Member for Box Hill, Mr Robert Clark, today presented the Mayor of the City of Boroondara, Cr Loreto Davey, with cheques totalling $42,500 for the Boroondara Library Service.
The cheques were part of more than $1 million of funding being provided by the State Government this year for local library projects and to expand libraries’ collections.
The grants will be used by the Boroondara Library Service to update and improve its cataloguing system and to expand its collections, including its popular Chinese language collection.
