 Sustainable capital works at the City of Darebin
Darebin City Council adopted an Environmental Policy in August 2000, which provides a policy framework for the City of Darebin to aim for its own operations to be ecologically, socially and economically sustainable and be a sustainability promoting organisation.
City of Darebin carry out a significant amount of capital projects each year and this is a priority area to implement our EMS.
The City of Darebin and RMIT have entered into a memorandum of understanding to further investigate and facilitate the development of sustainable practices.

Residents of Melbourne’s northern suburbs will be able to deal with their local government in any of ten community languages, thanks to the City of Darebin’s new multilingual telephone service.
The training program was co-ordinated by the City of Darebin’s multicultural relations officer, Delal Smiley, with Jianming Chen and Mary Vasilakakos of RMIT University’s Department of Language and International Studies.
Classes were taught at the university’s city campus by several of the department’s staff.

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Justin Madden, announced today the City of Darebin had won its bid to build the $3.6 million State Lawn Bowls Centre at John Cain Reserve in Northcote.
Mr Madden said sport and recreation events and facilities attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to Victoria each year and the addition of purpose-built facilities such as the State Lawn Bowls Centre would be a further drawcard.
Darebin won the process after Whitehorse withdrew its proposal.

This led to the eastern suburbs missing out on the Centre, which is to host the 2006 Commonwealth Games bowls, despite the Labor Party having made an election promise to locate the Centre in the eastern suburbs.
A circular issued by Darebin Bowls Club to its members reported that the Government’s bid consultant had “identified that the [Darebin] site is poorly located for major events in terms of transport access, lack of street frontage, and lack of close visitor accommodation and entertainment areas”.
Mr Clark said this was clear evidence that cost was a key factor in the Government going for the $3.6 million Darebin bid, rather than because the bid gave the best outcome.
