Supposing a Space: The Detecting Subject in Paul Auster's City of Glass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In City of Glass, the final space inside which we find Quinn is a "windowless cubicle," formerly a room of the Stillman apartment, where he strips naked and finally disappears altogether -- apparently the inexhaustible space of the city proves exhaustible after all.
As with the homeless wanderers in City of Glass, who "locked inside madness" are "unable to exit to the world that stands at the threshold of their bodies" (131), there is no way in or out of the locked room that is "located inside" the "skull" (345).
In fact, the City of Glass critiques a number of what David Harvey terms "spatial fixes" [8], especially attempts to construct utopian spaces, a tradition to which belongs Stillman's hope of restoring the world, of making it "whole" again, by resurrecting a "new Babel" in the year 1960.

 City of Glass
City of Glass, and the two subsequent volumes that make up the New York Trilogy, is, on one level, about the relationship between an author, his characters, and the readers of the books that he writes.
These issues are explored through the comparison of the detective and the crime that he is investigating to the reader/critic and the book that he or she is reading (there are also some extremely compelling passages about the structure of Don Quixote that delve into these issues).
City of Glass is Paul Auster's first official novel, not counting the popular detective novel that he wrote under a pseudonym.

Bookslut | City of Glass: The Graphic Novel by Paul Auster
A city where parents do horrible, monstrous things to their children (or maybe they don't; it all depends on what you take to be the truth of the story).
Ultimately, there's too much grit, and cruelty and madness in the story for it to serve as a romantic picture of the city, but there's also a sense of resignation, of accepting the truth about the thing you love, of seeing all the flaws and loving it all the same.
As a result, this collaboration creates a city of glass that is simultaneously reflective and transparent.

Originally published in 1985, City of Glass was the first part of Paul Auster's New York Trilogy, and instantly made him famous.
City of Glass has apparently been adapted into several (unsuccessful) screenplays, but it's difficult to imagine any director having the courage or imagination to produce a movie half as visually inventive as this comic.
If you haven't read City of Glass, then you have an intriguing dilemma: not which of the two books to read - you should read both - but which to read first.

 Trash City: Venetian Glass Chevrons
Venetian glass artisans have been influencing bead-makers from around the world for several centuries, and their production methods and designs have been most obviously emulated in many countries including India, America, China and the Czech Republic, many of whom buy their glass rods for making the beads from Murano itself.
Using a torch for heat, glass cane (also produced in Murano) is heated to a molten state and wrapped around a metal rod until the desired shape is formed.
The rods themselves are created by blowing molten glass into a hollow sphere, attaching each side to a metal plate, and then pulling the glass in opposite directions by two artisans thus producing a tube up to three hundred feet long.

Sven Birkets, who states that Auster's version of City of Glass is to the graphic novel version as Mozart is to "muzak," is characteristic of this dismissive stance.
Although Auster's City of Glass resists summation due to the open-ended nature of the narrative, a brief outline of the story is necessary in order to situate and understand the graphic version.
Unstable signifiers and the shifting ground of representation are especially apt visual interpretations of the narrative uncertainty and linguistic ambiguity in City of Glass.
