Named after Captain William Hobson, the City of Hobsons Bay is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia.
It was founded on June 22, 1994 during the forced amalgamations of local councils by the Kennett Government, and ended up being formed mostly by the former City of Williamstown and City of Altona local councils.

Hobsons Bay was named after William Hobson, an Irishman who, as captain of the H.M.S. Rattlesnake, conveyed the first government officials from Hobart to the new colony at Port Phillip (later Melbourne) in September of 1836 and then surveyed Port Phillip Bay.
The City of Hobsons Bay has a diversity of backgrounds and cultures in its people with approximately one third of the city’s residents being born overseas, and three quarters of these are from non-english speaking backgrounds.
The city is predominantly working class with Williamstown having in recent years become a highly sought after area attracting high income families whilst Laverton, in the far west of the city, has some of the lowest cost housing in Melbourne attracting low income earners.

The Hobsons Bay City Band is a growing community based, non-profit organisation based in the City of Hobsons Bay.
Originally, the band rehearsed in the City of Wyndham where, in September 1996, it was registered and performed as the Wyndham Symphonic Band Incorporated (WSB).
The former WSB won this bid and in 2000, it was appointed as the 'official' band for the City of Hobsons Bay.
