One of 50 or more tales in Dominique Lapierre's novel "The City of Joy," the rickshaw puller's story became the focus of the adaptation by Mark Medoff, who has basically written an epic buddy movie.

   "City of Joy" has been the subject of a recent media blitz touting Patrick Swayze's metamorphosis from heartthrob to "serious" actor.
The Pals don't get off to a very good start: They are cheated out of their rent money and thrown out on the streets, and it's difficult for Hasari to find a job to support them.
More importantly, it reminds the audience that no matter what color we are, we're all members of the human race, and each of us deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
