The City of Onkaparinga is a local government area (LGA) located on the southern fringe of Adelaide, South Australia.
The council is headquartered in the Noarlunga Centre with area offices situated in Aberfoyle Park and Willunga.
The City of Onkaparinga was formed on the 1 July 1997, from the amalgamation the former Cities of Happy Valley and Noarlunga with part of the District Council of Willunga.

In July 1997, the former City of Happy Valley, was amalgamated with the former City of Noarlunga and most of the former District Council of Willunga to form the City of Onkaparinga.
However, the City of Onkaparinga's policies 1commenced from the starting point of ecologically sustainable development, regardless of the subject matter eg asset management, finance, economic development etc. This was one of the first sustainability initiatives progressed in the new council.
Restructures within the City of Onkaparinga post 1997 have served to reinforce the importance of environmental management and to consolidate a sustainable development philosophy and integrated planning.

This unique 25-year-agreement covers redevelopment of the City of Onkaparinga’s six septic tank effluent disposal schemes (STEDS) to a stage enabling the water to be used for the irrigation of vineyards in the McLaren Vale and Willunga region.
The City of Onkaparinga has six such schemes, at Clarendon, Morphett Vale, Maslin’s Beach, McLaren Flat, McLaren Vale and Willunga.
As part of its overall strategy for the area, the Council sought a partner which could assist in the redevelopment of these schemes, including treatment of the effluent so that it could be used on vineyards whose expansion is threatened by a lack of water for irrigation.

The Onkaparinga City Concert Band is an active community-based, family-friendly, well resourced band located just 30 minutes south of the Adelaide CBD.
Formed in 1976, the Band draws its membership primarily from the beautiful Onkaparinga Region, characterised by rolling hills, orchards, the Onkaparinga National Park; the superb vineyards and villages of the Southern Vales, kilometres of unspoilt coastline and beaches, and southern metropolitan homes.

The Neighbourhood Development Program is funded through the South Australian Government’s Department of Human Services and City of Onkaparinga and sits within the Community Development section of the City of Onkaparinga, supporting 2.3 (FTE) workers.
It will also explore the attitudes of a small group of community people who live in the Onkaparinga Council region, in relation to the concept of Social Inclusion, how they see themselves within that concept and what they feel it is important to consider when addressing this issue.
Another positive aspect to the project, is that it has opened up the possibility of some partnership work between the Social Inclusion Unit and City of Onkaparinga and that aspect is currently being pursued.
