It is a coastal city beside the Southern Ocean, and is situated on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, between the Gulf St. Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges.
Adelaide's first hospital was the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), founded in 1840, it is one of the major hospitals in Adelaide and is a teaching hospital of the University of Adelaide.
Adelaide has one freeway, the South Eastern Freeway, connecting the city with the Adelaide Hills, and two expressways; the Port River Expressway connecting Port Adelaide and Outer Harbour to interstate routes and the Southern Expressway, an interchangeable one-way road connecting the southern suburbs with the city proper.

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield was established in 1996 through an amalgamation of Port Adelaide and Enfield councils, and is one of the larger metropolitan councils within South Australia.
From the 1830’s to 1945, the area surrounding Port Adelaide was subdivided into many small district areas as owners bought, subdivided and sold areas of land.

The condition of Adelaide's Port Waterways will benefit from over $2.9 million in funding, including $1.6 million from the Howard Government's $2.7 billion Natural Heritage Trust, announced today.
This is in addition to the $370,000 already committed by the Commonwealth and South Australian Governments for the development of a Water Quality Improvement Plan to protect the environmental values of Adelaide's Port Waterways by achieving nutrient discharge and environmental flow targets.
In the Adelaide plains area, untreated stormwater from approximately 770 ha of industrial and residential areas discharges directly into the Barker Inlet estuary and marine environment.

A mercury-riddled dolphin found in the Port River in 1999 sparked public concern over the health of South Australia’s Gulf of St Vincent and highlighted the impacts of pollutants flowing from the century old industrial zones in Port Adelaide to the Port River Estuary and the Gulf.
The funding has been allocated from the Natural Heritage Trust to the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, which then disseminates grants to industry groups that are taking part.
As the largest tidal inlet in the Gulf of St Vincent, the Port River Estuary is an important nursery and feeding area for commercial and recreational fish species.
