Salford Advertiser - Stadium delay a threat to Reds future
Salford City Reds say it’s unlikely the 22,000-capacity stadium will be ready for the start of the 2009 rugby league season as planned, due to a lack of firm interest in renting retail space at the new ground which would have financed its construction.
Red City Developments had hoped by now to have sold a significant amount of retail space, but due to protracted talks with various companies they are considering selling part of the stadium to an equity fund so building work can begin at the Barton site.
Permission was granted for a new stadium in November 2006 and it was hoped that construction would begin on site in September 2007, but Red City’s managing director Adam Thomas has revealed delays in negotiations have lead to a re-think in order to get the project back on track.
