Sydney is a significant global and domestic tourist destination and is regularly declared to be one of the most beautiful and liveable cities in the world, admired for its harbour, beautiful coastline, warm and pleasant climate and cosmopolitan culture.
Sydney occupies two geographical regions: the Cumberland Plain, a relatively flat or rolling region lying to the south and west of the harbour, and the Hornsby Plateau, a plateau north of the harbour, up to 200 m in elevation, dissected by forested valleys.
As of 2005, the councils of the City of Sydney and the City of South Sydney are merged.

The "City of Sydney" was established in 1842 by the Corporation Act which encompasses present-day Woolloomooloo, Surry Hills, Chippendale and Pyrmont, an area of 11.65 km².
The Municipality of Camperdown was merged with the city in 1909.
South Sydney was brought back into the city in 1982, but became separate again under the City of Sydney Act of 1988 and then became smaller than its original size at 6.19 km².

The traditional owners of the Sydney City region are the Cadigal band.
Suburbs close to the city such as Glebe are also the home of the Cadigal and Wangal Wangal ancestors and the surrounding bushland contains remnants of traditional plant, bird and animal life with fish and rock oysters available from Blackwattle Bay.
Almost half of Sydney's Indigenous population died in the smallpox epidemic of 1789 and it is said only three Cadigal people were left by 1791.
