The study area is the Yarra River corridor between Punt Road and Bourke Road, including all public and private land in the surrounding area visible from the river.
As the Yarra River passes through eight municipalities and agencies such as Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water also have management responsibilities, a consistent and coordinated regional approach is required to effectively manage and plan for the river valley.
Along the Yarra River valley, the pressures for development are particularly intense between Punt Road and Burke Road, where private land is in close proximity to the river and former industrial sites are undergoing redevelopment for commercial and residential uses.

Greg Barber, who helped spearhead the Greens' Yarra campaign and won 47 per cent of the primary vote in his ward, said doorknocking had revealed the environment as the number one local concern for the city dwellers who voted last weekend.
Yarra polling booths in the federal electorate of Melbourne returned the highest Green vote in the federal poll, recording a primary vote of about 19 per cent.

 UN Award for Australian Local Government assisting East Timorese Asylum Seeker
The City of Yarra was awarded this week for its campaign on behalf of its local East Timorese community, receiving the 'Golden World United Nations Award' for 2003.
Yarra Mayor Greg Barber has welcomed the award, saying it represented what could be achieved when councils are in touch with the values and concerns of their community and work in partnership to advocate in areas normally outside council's role.
Cr Barber said the City of Yarra would not forget the needs of those community members whose residency status was still unresolved, and would continue to advocate on their behalf.

In the twelve months prior to the 2004 election there were four well-attended public meetings, at which Yarra residents have made it clear they are dissatisfied with Yarra Council's response to the threat, and want strong action from the council to oppose the road lobby and the State Government's pro-road, anti-sustainable transport stance.
Yarra should call on the State government to restructure its planning agencies and processes to break the power of the road lobby.

A discussion paper on graffiti, "tags" and street art was released by the council last night and could lead to some of the city's graffiti being protected under heritage controls.
Yarra Mayor Greg Barber said the council would embark on a "whole of community" strategy towards graffiti, possibly featuring protection for some of the city's more inspired street art.

At Yarra Bend Park, the largest area of natural vegetation near the City of Melbourne, the landscape varies from steep, wild river escarpments to open woodlands, formal parkland, playing fields and golf courses.

The Yarra River would be redeveloped from Richmond station to the Docklands with $4 billion of projects on the drawing board, the Acting Premier John Thwaites announced today.
With the international spotlight to be on Melbourne in 2006 for the Commonwealth Games, Mr Thwaites said major work was needed to overcome problems that had prevented the success of Southbank flowing to the north bank of the river.
Launching the Yarra Plan, Mr Thwaites said the Government had appointed a high-level Management Committee to lead 40 public and private developments to turn Melbourne into a waterfront city.
