Zion - MormonWiki - Mormonism - the LDS Church, Beliefs & Religion
Zion, in Mormonism, represents the perfect, just society ruled by Jesus Christ where all the inhabitants live in harmony, equally sharing all things.
Unlike the city of Enoch, which was established by Enoch and his righteous followers, the city of Salem appears to have been an unrighteous city (Alma 13:17-18) which was brought to repent under the influence of Melchizedek's preaching.
At one time in the history of the Mormon Church the Lord counseled his people to gather together in Zion, which is why so many people crossed the plains to Utah so that they could be together in one place and try to build a just society.

Zion or Tzion (צִיּוֹן "Height", Standard Hebrew Ẓiyyon, Tiberian Hebrew Ṣiyyôn; Arabic صهيون Ṣuhyūn) originally was the specific name given to a Jebusite fortress near modern-day Jerusalem that was conquered by David.
Zion, or Sion, is an archaic term that originally referred to a section of Jerusalem, which, by Biblical definition, is the City of David.
This city became so righteous and pure that it was translated (taken) (http://scriptures.lds.org/moses/7/21#18) from the presence of the earth (http://scriptures.lds.org/moses/7/69#69) and brought into the presence of God, leaving behind on earth only Methuselah and his family (including Noah) to repopulate the earth with righteous people.

In another sense, Zion refers to the New Jerusalem, a physical, Millennial city expected to be headquartered in Jackson County, Missouri.
Geographical uses of the name "Zion" are associated with references in the Book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price, where Enoch the son of Jared founds a city for the righteous descendants of Adam (Moses 7:19).
In a literal sense, Zion (the New Jerusalem) (Articles of Faith:10) is a city that Latter-day Saints believe will be built (Covenant 57:113) in Jackson County, Missouri, and a common reference to both North and South America as the "Promised Land".

The new sketch of the City of Zion "Drawn by F. Williams" is housed in the LDS archives.

As is common when Mormon history is retold, it is full of emotional aspects that tend to blur the actual facts.

Dave's Mormon Inquiry: City on a Hill
Characteristically, Joseph Smith drew his inspiration from the Old Testament rather than New Testament: Zion, the City of Enoch, and the New Jerusalem were his symbols of the ideal Christian society.
For all the talk of cities, the "city on a hill" image is rarely applied to Zion in LDS discourse; instead it is used to illustrate the simpler "be a good example" lesson.
Maybe that's because, modernly, LDS Zion is now seen as a way of life or a societal concept, not as a blueprint for a city.

Mormon historical records demonstrate that Smith not only felt that he was superior in physical strength to most men, but he also believed he had the inside track with God.
