The city was named after Manuel L. Quezon, the former president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines who founded the city and developed it to replace Manila as the country's capital.
The city lies on a relatively high plateau on the northeast corner of the metropolis between the lowlands of Manila to the southwest and the Marikina River valley to the east.
Quezon City is bordered by Manila to the southwest, by Caloocan City and Valenzuela City to the west and northwest.

The term city region has been in use since about 1950 by urbanists, economists and urban planners to mean not just the administrative area of a recognisable city or conurbation but also its hinterland that will often be far bigger.
Conventionally, if one lives in an apparently rural area, suburb or county town where a majority of wage-earners travel into a particular city for a full or part-time job then one is (in effect) residing in the city region.
In the United Kingdom, the city regional agenda is picking up as an alternative to the Regional Assemblies that were favoured as a partial answer to the West Lothian Question but rejected in a referendum by voters in November 2004.

This was the unanimous decision of the inter-agency regional assessment team (RAT) following on-site validation of entries in the cities, as well as in the different winners in the provincial search within the region.
