CityRail is losing more train drivers than are graduating from its training program, six months after a critical shortage of staff nearly crippled the commuter rail network.
A CityRail spokeswoman said $4 million had been spent last financial year on training and $400 monthly bonuses had been paid to drivers to persuade them to work overtime when the staff crisis was at its worst in February.
The focus of CityRail's attempts to lift driver numbers, as announced by its chief executive, Vince Graham, in April, has been to reduce the traineeship period from 26 months to 21 months - and to attract recruits from other parts of the corporation or industry.

Sydney's trains are back on track, with 92 per cent of peak-hour trains running on time across the CityRail network, the NSW government says.

The vast majority of Cityrail staff want no part of this, and this is a contributing factor to their apparent apathy on this issue.
The worst was from Cityrail's PR department, which basically asserted that, because announcements were being played and signs were up, Cityrail was already complying with the regulations, and no more action was needed.
Cityrail staff, guards, sometimes police, are usually around, and often hanging around the extreme ends of the platforms, smoking as well.

Sabotage has emerged as a possible cause of the Waterfall rail disaster in NSW after evidence of crushed rocks was found on the tracks close to where the train was derailed.
The mounds of blue metal, used as ballast to support tracks, were discovered by CityRail inspectors within hours of the crash that killed seven people on January 31.
It is believed that a senior CityRail inspector was so concerned by the ballast that he asked a police officer to take photographs.
