BRITISH Airways is considering a bid for CityFlyer Express, one of the main regional airlines operating out of Gatwick, in an effort to recoup some of the airport takeoff and landing slots it has to surrender as a condition for its alliance with American Airlines.
CityFlyer, which has turnover of £100m and is owned by City institutions led by 3i, already operates under the BA name as a franchisee and has done so since July 1993 when it became the first BA franchise airline.
CityFlyer is said to be profitable and expects to carry 1.5m passengers this year, up from 1.2m in 1997.

As CityFlyer’s shareholders wished to sell the business it seemed unlikely that the status quo would be maintained; and we took the view that no single scenario from the range of other possibilities was sufficiently likely to arise to be regarded as the probable alternative to the merger.

I suspect their response will be along the lines that the standard Qantas service level is no free alcohol in domestic Y, and the CityFlyer arrangement is a bonus for those customers.
CityFlier services that provide the free alcohol are generally very high load factors and very high yeild (lots of Y and B fares on board).
