With the exception of the Sierra de Escambray, Cienfuegos is low lying with an economy almost entirely dedicated to the growing and processing of sugar.

Frequent sewer backups experienced in La Habana may be the result of lift stations that are not functioning, sewage lines that have ruptured, sewage lines in which flow has been impeded because of the accumulation of debris, and treatment plants that are unable to accept flows (Cereijo 1992, 89).

Since September 2002 the international research project "CAESAR: Cooperative applied environmental systems research of urban-rural interface (Sustainability and land use in the Havana region, Cuba)", financed by the European Commission within their 5th Framework Programme, is investigating the complex environmental problems in Cuba’s capital province, the Provincia Ciudad de La Habana.
Research is done in two steps, the first one covering the whole province at the scale of 1:50,000, the second one focussing on the drainage basins of two major rivers, Río Almendares and Río Quibú (1:25.000).
Some results obtained from the first-year study at the province level are presented here, with emphasis on geoecological landscape classification, the status or stage of degradation of units identified and their potential for agricultural land use.
