The term civil engineering was first used in the 18th century to distinguish the newly recognized profession from military engineering,until then preeminent.
The beginnings of civil engineering as a separate discipline may be seen in the foundation in France in 1716 of the Bridge and Highway Corps, out of which in 1747 grew the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées ("National School of Bridges and Highways").
Civil engineers have always played an important part in mining for coal and metals; the driving of tunnels is a task common to many branches of civil engineering.

 I grew up at College Hill, Mississippi and enrolled as freshman in Engineering School in fall of 1940
I was deferred from draft and allowed to complete accelerated Civil Engineering course in September 1943, during WWII.
I was employed as an Assistant Civil Engineer by the Humble Oil and Refining Co. (Exxon), promoted to Civil Engineer in December 1946, and to District       Engineer in September 1948.
The other statement was that if one did not keep abreast of his particular branch of engineering, after five years one had lost his ability to function in that particular facet.

 Complex to honor careers of civil engineering leaders
The new headquarters of the University's department of civil, environmental and architectural engineering will honor the careers of three KU alumni who led the Kansas City-based international engineering firm Black and Veatch.
It will include faculty offices, a conference room and administrative office space for the department, which was formed in 2001 when the architectural engineering program merged with the civil and environmental engineering program.
He is a past president of the Alumni Association and a former chair of the advisory board of the School of Engineering.

 Rensselaer's School of Engineering
Known as the “Father of the Civil Engineering Corps,” Mordecai Endicott was the first of many distinguished Rensselaer graduates to lead the Navy’s civil engineering efforts.
He was commissioned as a civil engineer in the U.S. Navy in 1874 and by 1890 was posted to Washington, D.C., and given control of all civil engineering projects.
Later he was given the rank of rear admiral, the first of more than 50 Rensselaer graduates to attain the rank of admiral.

June 28, Colombo: The United States Embassy in Colombo said today that thirty Crisis Corps volunteers from the US Peace Corps will arrive in Sri Lanka over the next two weeks to help the people of Sri Lanka rebuild their lives, homes and communities after the December 26 tsunami.
In a statement, the Embassy said, “The volunteers, all former Peace Corps volunteers in different countries, are professionals with technical expertise in areas ranging from international organizational development and coordination, management and administration, to civil engineering.
Crisis Corps Country Representative Robin Cantino said, “It is an honor for the US Crisis Corps to have the opportunity to assist the people of Sri Lanka in the post-tsunami relief and reconstruction phase.”
