 Music of the Civil War
It sounds more like a marching song than the sad song that it is, and soldiers have used it as a marching song ever since, creating different lyrics to fit each situation.
It is a funny song that also speaks of a soldier’s wish for the war to be over so that he can be home hugging his sweetheart and, of course, eating more goober peas.
The melody of the song was written as a hymn tune by William Steffe, in 1856.

Probably the most famous Civil War era song was Julia Ward Howe’s "Battle Hymn of the Republic", which used the tune of the abolitionist song, "John Brown’s Body".
Students will probably look at the first stanza of the song as the most significant, with lyrics like "I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten" as indication that the south had sentimental value to soldiers who might be fighting in battle, and hopefully fighting in the north.
Some may note that "Union Dixie" is more topical to the Civil War, while" Dixie’s Land" is more simply a memory of the Old South, and not as military in nature.

As for the topic of this topical song: It's not just looking backward to the Spanish Civil War, and the contemporary problem wasn't just US military sales to Spain.
Tourism to Franco Spain really was a crisis-of-conscience issue for mildly left-wing travelers in the 1960s: a beautiful country, and unbeatable prices, but yes, the government was still headed by Hitler's old (or oldest) ally.
This song strikes me as one of the least successful, but I don't mind: it's part of the outpouring that made the many better songs possible.

The best "song" on the CD is a reading of a Sullivan Ballou letter written to his wife a few days before an epic battle.
The 9th song -- Johhny has Gone For a Soldier -- I'm grateful to have on CD, it was a short and simple piece played several times in the documentary and I had no idea what the name of this song was.
The Civil War soundtrack is, pound for pound, probably the most enduring favorite in my entire music collection (Mahler, Satie, Kate Rusby, Rich Muliins, Dougie MacLean, Duke Ellington, and Our Lady Peace included!) There is a TON of great music on this disc.
