Civil aviation is one of two major categories of flying, representing all non-Military aviation, both private and commercial.
For the public, the most visible part of civil aviation is scheduled air transport, but in fact, the vast majority of the world's flights operate under general aviation.
The Convention on International Civil Aviation (the Chicago Convention) was originally established in 1944: it states that signatories should collectively work to harmonize and standardize the use the use of airspace for safety, efficiency and regularity of air transport.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an agency of the United Nations, codifies the principles and techniques of international air navigation and fosters the planning and development of international air transport to ensure safe and orderly growth.
In addition, the ICAO defines the protocols for air accident investigation followed by transport safety authorities in countries signatory to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, commonly known as the Chicago Convention.
The 8th edition of the Convention on International Civil Aviation includes modifications from 1948 up to year 2000.
