Civilization III: Play the World - PC
The Civilization series was always known for one peculiar thing: the games never came with multiplayer, which was released separately as an expansion or even a standalone game.
Play the World is supposed to run through GameSpy Network, but after two days of trying, the best result I got was playing a game through two turns before it closed and dumped everybody who was connected.
While Play the World installed itself into a new sub-folder and thus all the old tunes are still available, according to more knowledgeable Civilization fans, there is no easy way to incorporate them into Play the World.

You're not going to be playing the world with this game, unless you can get it set up on a LAN or by cramming all your friends into one room and taking turns on a single computer in hotseat mode.
The best way to enjoy Civilization III in multiplayer is on a LAN, where the lag isn't much of an issue and you can usually recover from the crashes.

The civil defense is a godsend, making it easier to protect vulnerable borders and proving a tempting distraction target for enemy bombers flying in.
"Play the World" is a broken expansion pack for now, but even if everything worked it would still be a meager addition to such a large game.

Civilization games have always been engrossing, time-consuming affairs, as was proven with Civilization III, so it comes as no surprise that fans of the series will find the same thing happening with the Play The World expansion pack, despite the fact that it doesn't radically alter the basic gameplay equation.
This one function alone is likely to bring a sigh of relief to most hard core Civilization III players, as it is more efficient than finding cities in distress using the advisor mode, or simply scanning the map hoping you won't miss any.

UGO.com Games - Sid Meier's Civilization III: Play the World preview
Civilization III was released last year to rave reviews, but one disappointment was the lack of multiplayer.
New city improvements include Civil Defense (a 50% bonus to unit and bombardment defense), the Commercial Dock (adds trade for each water tile in city's radius) and the Stock Exchange (which becomes the prerequisite for the Wall Street Small Wonder and adds a 50% tax output from the city in which it is built).
There should be no reason for any Civilization III owner, both casual and hardcore, to not pick up the expansion, if only to finally have Romans pitted against Carthaginians, or to see if this time, the Aztecs can repel the Spanish.

Amazon.com: Civilization 3 Expansion: Play the World: Video Games   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The "Play the World" expansion pack was originally released in 2002 and it was generally considered buggy and incomplete.
Civilization is my favorite game all time so any expansion that is put out isn't going to be a price sensitive purchase for me. I felt ripped off paying $29 for the expansion, but it was worth it to me because I am a hardcore civilization player.
Its flaw, although not directly related to the game, is that Firaxis/Atari released the "Play the World" add-on separate first (charging $20 for that game as well) and included it free in "Conquests." While it was a smart choice to sell them together for "Conquests", those of us that purchased the first add-on feel cheated.

There are people who want to play the game like that; just sort of take the single-player game and play it with their friends.
We also believe there are people who want to play a shorter game, for an hour or two, and we cater to them, as well, with the new game types like Capture the Flag and Regicide.
These types of games can be played in single-player, so you can play on your lunch hour or before you go to bed without worrying about having a long game.

Playing online over the Internet or via email, or (for faster play) over a local area network, you can now take on human opponents utilising the classic turn-based mode, a simultaneous mode, or in turnless mode.
The biggest problem with Play The World is the fact it appears to have been rushed out the door without even the most cursory of playtesting periods.
Most Civ III players will be thinking of buying this purely for the multiplayer capabilities, and while PTW has great potential once the glitches are fixed, we can only suggest in the meantime that you visit the Play The World forums for updates on patches and user feedback before forking out your cash.
