Further, one may say that Grossetto is on the diligence road from Civita Vecchia to Leghorn, and that in the very heart of the place there is a lovely palm-tree, rare, if not sole, in that latitude.
But such was the desolating and depressing influence of the weather and the landscape, that we reached Civita Vecchia as undecided as we had left Rome.
We were thoroughly humbled in spirit, and had no longer any doubt that we did ill to take the diligence at Civita Vecchia instead of the steamer ; for we had been, not nineteen hours, but four days on the road, and we had suffered as aforementioned.

Benjamin Hallowell Biography - Part 2
Lord Nelson perceived that no object was as essential for the tranquillity of Naples as the recovery of Rome, in the present state of things which, with the Russians driving the French before them, would complete the deliverance of Italy.
The Swiftsure sailed from Naples on the 7th Aug., and on her arrival off Civita Vecchia, a French officer of distinction came on board with a flag of truce; but nothing was then decided.
Captain Hallowell however, subsequently entered into a negotiation, and had paved the way for the enemy's surrender when he was taken from his station by Captain Foley of the Goliath; that ship, together with the Swiftsure, being ordered by Lord Keith to proceed to Gibraltar.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Pope Nicholas III
Probably at an earlier date the administration of the Roman churches of San Lorenzo in Damaso and of San Crisogono had been entrusted to him.

In 1252 he was dispatched on an unsuccessful mission of peace to the warring Guelphs and Ghibellines of Florence.

Life and Letters of Robert Browning eBook
Browning became acquainted with Stendhal, then French Consul at Civita Vecchia, and that he imbibed from the great novelist a taste for curiosities of Italian family history, which ultimately led him in the direction of the Franceschini case.
It is certain that he profoundly admired this writer, and if he was not, at some time or other, introduced to him it was because the opportunity did not occur.
Stendhal died in Paris in March 1842; and granting that he was at Civita Vecchia when the poet made his earlier voyage—no certainty even while he held the appointment—the ship cannot have touched there on its way to Trieste.

 Italy - Leaving Venice
WE did not know, when we started from home in Venice, on the 8th of November, 1864, that we had taken the longest road to Rome.
We thought that of all the proverbial paths to the Eternal City that leading to Padua, and thence through Ferrara and Bologna to Florence, and so down the sea-shore from Leghorn to Civita Vecchia, was the best, the briefest, and the cheapest.
Who could have dreamed that this path, so wisely and carefully chosen, would lead us to Genoa, conduct us on shipboard, toss us four dizzy days and nights, and set us down, void, battered, and bewildered, in Naples ?
