NACo | Clackamas County settles Supreme Court case
Rather than complete the appeals process at the U.S. Supreme Court level, the Clackamas County (Ore.) Board of Commissioners agreed on Oct. 21 to settle the legal claims brought against the county by a former probationary deputy sheriff.
When reported by County News in the Sept. 29 issue, the Board of Commissioners had determined that evidence of discriminatory behavior by county employees against the plaintiff had been very flimsy, and the board voted to appeal the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision in Bell v.
Two concerns for the county were the slim chance the Supreme Court would actually review the case and the cost to the county of $25,000 to $40,000 for filing the case with the court, according to Edward McGlone, the assistant county counsel who was the county’s lead on the case.
