Cladding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cladding is often achieved by extruding two metals through a die or pressing sheets together under high pressure.
Cladding applied to windows is often referred to as window capping and is a very specialized field.
In nuclear reactors, cladding is the outer layer of the fuel rods, standing between the coolant and the nuclear fuel.

 Metal cladding
Cladding is prevalently applied at the mill stage by the manufacturers of sheet, plate or tubing.
Cladding by pressing, rolling or extrusion can produce a coating in which the thickness and distribution can be controlled over wide ranges and the coatings produced free of porosity.
Among the principal uses are aluminum cladding in the aircraft industry, lead and cadmium sheathing for cables, lead-sheathed sheets for architectural applications and composite extruded tubes for heat exchangers.

Cladding Corp: The Rainscreen Principle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Specifically, a rainscreen system must include a drained and vented cladding, a cavity behind the cladding, an air barrier system in the backup wall, compartment seals in the cavity and suitable flashings for drainage from the cavity.
As the wind impinges on the cladding, it penetrates into the wall cavity through cladding vents to push on the backup wall air barrier system.
Also, should a leak occur through the exterior wall it may be necessary to dismantle part of the cladding to make corrections or repairs, The rainscreen system cannot be repaired by the application of caulking to the outside.

 Laser Cladding
Cladding materials are chosen based on whether they need to provide corrosion resistance, wear resistance or higher hardness, depending upon the use of the base part being clad.
Low dilution means there is very little of the base material mixing in with the clad, leaving a surface layer of cladding that is very close to the pure clad material.
There is a small zone of base material that does get melted in with the clad, and therefore creates a very good metallurgical bond, versus thermal spray types of cladding that are literally sprayed onto the surface and do not have a solid bond between the two layers.

Building Technology - Cladding   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The major purpose of cladding is to separate the indoor environment of a building from the outdoors in such a way that the indoor environment can be maintained at levels suitable for the intended use.
The role of a sealant is to fill the joints between cladding components, preventing the flow of air and/or water, while still allowing reasonable dimensional tolerances for assembly and reasonable amounts of subsequent movement between the components.
Sealants are typically used to seal joints between panels of stone or precast concrete in a curtain wall, to seal the joint beneath the shelf angle in a brick curtain wall, and to seal joints between dissimilar materials, such as where a metal and glass curtain wall ends against a masonry wall.

Industrial Laser Solutions - The slow industrial acceptance of laser cladding
Laser cladding is one of several ways in which a wear- or corrosion-resistant surface layer can be applied to repair or extend the life of components.
Laser cladding is a production application in cladding of steam turbine blades, for manufacture of gas turbine blades on both sides of the Atlantic, for repair of gas turbine blades, for hard facing of oil field valves, hard-banding of drill rods, and surfacing of automotive and diesel valves.
In general, laser cladding appears to require a dedication to the specialty to make it successful, and companies, either processing shops or equipment vendors, that attempt to add laser cladding to their diverse capabilities do it much less successfully than companies that specialize in it.

Baker Hughes Geothermal - Completions - Expandable Technology - Cladding
Cladding is a method of tubular rehabilitation in which a liner, made of expandable solids, is lowered into place and expanded inside damaged pipe.
The expansion "clads" the two pipes into one, giving the well a new liner that has minimal reduction in the same internal diameter as the original, damaged pipe.
A key component of the cased hole clad system is cladding — the lining of a bore in intimate contact with a sleeve or liner.

External cladding panels The burning issue
A Parliamentary Inquiry which investigated the risks posed by fire spread through external cladding systems has concluded that the majority of systems in use in the UK do not pose a serious risk to life or property.
The document was updated, stating that Class O material should be used on both the inside and outside of external cladding and include 'fire stopping' in the gap between the cladding and the building wall.
However, the parliamentary inquiry team pointed out that the move does not require cladding systems to pass the test; simply that it is one way of ensuring that the system meets Building Regulation requirements.

The cladding completely encompasses the core and is made of glass that is more pure than the core.
Because of the difference in glass purity, the boundary where the core and cladding meet becomes the reflective surface that keeps the light signal inside the core.

Cladding mode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In fiber optics, a cladding mode is a mode that is confined to the cladding of an optical fiber by virtue of the fact that the cladding has a higher refractive index than the surrounding medium, which is either air or the primary polymer overcoat.
Modern fibers have a primary polymer overcoat with a refractive index that is slightly higher than that of the cladding, so that light propagating in the cladding is rapidly attenuated and disappears after only a few centimeters of propagation.
An exception to this is double-clad fiber, which is designed to support a mode in its inner cladding, as well as one in its core.
