Cladium jamaicense -- Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants
It also occurs throughout the southeastern U.S. growing in fresh- and brackish-water wetlands where it provides food and shelter to water birds and other animals (Kartesz, 1999).
Two species of Cladium exist in Florida (Wunderlin, 1998).

SAC selection - 7210 Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus and species of the Caricion davallianae
The juxtaposition between species-poor stands of Cladium and areas with a more diverse floristic composition and structure is widespread, with characteristically species-rich contact zones between the two.
There are important species-rich transitions from Cladium fen to mire with fl bog-rush Schoenus nigricans and blunt-flowered rush Juncus subnodulosus, as well as to fen-meadow vegetation with purple moor-grass Molinia caerulea and meadow thistle Cirsium dissectum.
The Cladium habitat occurs in a diverse set of conditions that maintain its species-richness, including managed Cladium fen, contacts between Cladium beds and small sedge mires, and situations where Cladium occurs at the limits of its ecological range.

CESI Project Page-Using Transect Sampling to Relate a Phosphorus Addition Flume Study to Long-term Water Quality ...
Cladium was extirpated within 1 km of the L-7/L-39 canal during this time, and at our 2 km site we found the kind of Typha-Cladium mixed community that was only 1 km from the canal in 1989.
In WCA-2A, the impacted Typha marsh expanded from 2 km to 4 km from the L-39 canal during this decade, and by 1999 Cladium was no longer present within 4 km of the S-10C structure.
We were also able to sample both Cladium or Eleocharis marsh plots at all sites along the 16 km WCA-3A transect-a situation not possible in 1989.

SOFIA - Poster - Consequences of Fire and Freeze on a Mangrove-Marsh Ecotone
We established a transect across this ecotone that begins in coastal marsh, dominated by sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) and terminates in mixed mangrove forest (Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, and Avicennia germinans, Conocarpus erectus).
Along the transect, the burn was of low intensity due to the presence of surface water and inadequate wind to push the fire into unburned fuel (table 2).
In plot 2, a Schinus that originally established on a Cladium clump has many basal sprouts and was not permanently killed by the fire.

Mean total ecosystem P standing stocks ranged from 3.46 in wet prairie, 3.65 in Cladium, 7.29 in Cladium/Typha, to 10.44 g P m-2 in Typha marsh.
In Cladium marsh, P partitioning is 4x and 6x greater in live and dead aboveground macrophytes, respectively, and 5x less in periphyton compared to the same components in wet prairie.
The smaller periphyton and greater macrophyte biomass in Cladium marsh relative to wet prairie are paralleled in less periphyton (0.27 g P m-2 yr-1) and more macrophyte (0.23 g P m-2 yr-1) throughput.

The vegetation of the Everglades and in particular the marl prairies is linked to both microtopography and the hydrology of the land.
The muhly grass prairies tend to exist at higher elevation than the thin sawgrass areas which in turn exist at higher elevations than thick stands of sawgrass.
If there is a series of dry years, the Muhlenbergia grass/thin stands of Cladium ecotone may shift down in elevation.

Levels of soil total phosphorus (TP) have become elevated in the northern part of Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA-2A).
Vegetation community changes in the past 20 years in this impacted area are characterized by the invasion of Typha domingensis into historically Cladium jamaicense marshes and aquatic slough communities.
The objective of this study was to calibrate modern pollen assemblage data from surface soil samples with soil nutrient data and observed macrophyte community changes across a TP gradient at 31 sites in WCA-2A.
