Fixing clamav to work with Qmail-Scanner
One of the problems with clamav, indeed with any virus scanner, is that it takes time to load and parse all of the virus definitions into memory when the scanner starts up.
ClamAV comes with a program called clamd which loads the virus definitions into memory and then sits in the background, waiting to be told which files to scan.
Then, other userid's which need to read the files (such as the "clamav" user that clamd normally runs as, or the "spamd" user that spamassassin's "spamd" process runs as) could be added to the appropriate group, and the other scanners would have permission to read the files as needed.

ClamAV is a free GPLed anti-virus solution which provides a lot of advantages when installed in Linux.
ClamAV has been developed targeting firms running mail servers in mind and so is designed to check for virus on the fly.
ClamAV uses a large file with all the historic signatures (main.cvd) and a smaller file (daily.cvd) that is always downloaded in full when a new version is available.

Welcome to the SOSDG - ClamAV/SOSDG
Because ClamAV is released under the GPL v2 license, you must follow all license requirements if you modify the ClamAV source code, or use it in your own projects.
You can use ClamAV freely and distribute it freely, provided that if you redistribute it,you make the source available (either included with the installer, or on request from the other person) without restrictions along with any changes made to the source that differ from the original source code.
You may use ClamAV exe files with third-party closed source programs provided that they are only accessed as a separate program and not used as a library or integrated with the closed source application (ie: linked).

ClamAV has some particular requirements without which it cannot be built, please see the section entitled 'Installation'.
Starting clamav 0.86.2 you must provide the --timeout 0 option when using the internal scanner (which is the default).
Solution: put clamav into group amavis, restart clamd and amavis, check if mail is processed correctly Note: I use postfix and no mail was lost for this problem, it simply retried the queues when clamav and amavis where restarted

ClamAV - the free virus scanner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
ClamAV has been developed for Unix/Linux, but as it has been developed using GNU tools it has been ported to other platforms, including Windows.
Polymorphic viruses: ClamAV is fairly poor at detecting polymorphic viruses (viruses that employ variable encryption methods so as to avoid detection by simple signature matching.) It can detect some polymorphics reliably, it detects only a percentage of some, while others are not detected at all.
ClamAV still has a fair way to go before it can approach the performance of industry-leading anti-virus products such as Kaspersky AntiVirus, but it has become quite an effective tool, comparing not too badly with some commercial products.

At first, ClamAV was an add-on to OpenAntiVirus, but it soon became so popular that Kojm developed his own daemon application and started working on ClamAV as a separate solution.
ClamAV has more than 120 officially published mirrors in 39 countries, and it's still early days yet—the project hasn't yet reached version 1.0, though Kojm says that's likely to come in the next year or so.
ClamAV also boasts a number of active mailing lists, which Kojm says keep most users from having to turn to commercial support for help.

Configuring clamav with amavisd-new - Can't connect to UNIX socket - /parts: Access denied
Once you have ClamAV installed and the clamav user and clamav group have been created and the above requirements have been met, all you may need to do is make the user "clamav" a member of the same group that the amavisd-new user belongs to.
Installing and configuring ClamAV from source code is somewhat more daunting and you will have to come up with way to start clamd automatically and automate the virus definition database updates.
From what I see, when clamd is installed, the "clamav" user that is created (either manually or by the installation process) is the only "normal" user that can write to the files that the program uses during it's operation.
