Clan Farquharson, of Celtic origin, derives from Farquhar, fourth son of Alexander "Ciar" Mackintosh of Rothiemurchus, 5th Chief of Clan Shaw.
Farquhar settled in the Braes of Mar and was appointed baillie or chamberlain thereof.
The Farquharsons having moved onto their Deeside inheritance became vassels of the Earldom of Mar. In the early 17th century they were able to purchase feu charters to their lands and after the attainder of the Earl of Mar, who led the Jacobite rising of 1715, they held these directly of the Crown.

In 1424 the Clan Lennox was decimated and Iain Colqhoun of Luss took advatage of this to win the King's favour by capturing Dumbarton Castle from Lennox.
The Clan Colquhoun were among the clans who fought against the English at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547, where the Colquhoun Chief was killed.
Luss was raided by the thieving Clan MacGregor in 1603, leading to a bloody battle and defeat of five hundred Colquhoun men, three hundred of whom were on horseback, by four hundred MacGregor men at Glen Fruin.
