Simon's grandson, Sir Alexander Fraser of Cowie and Durris, acquired the castle now called Cairnbulg and the lands of Philorth by marriage with Joanna, younger daughter and co-heiress of the Earl of Ross in 1375.
Andrew Fraser of Muchalls was raised to the peerage in June 1633 with the title, 'Lord Fraser'.
Frasers of Philorth, now Saltoun have never been called "MacShimidh" because they do not descend from Sir Simon, neither do the Lowland Frasers have a Gaelic patronymic title of their own, because Gaelic was reserved for use by Highland people and Clans.

There John Fraser became a newspaper man and song writer under the name of "Uncle Sandy." In 1874 he met his death at the hands of political enemies, during a recess of the House of Parliament, which had been debating his stand against the existing unfair taxation.
Fraser became a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York, and began his career as an illustrator which during succeeding years made his name well known among readers of such magazines as the Ladies’ Home Journal, Leslie’s, St. Nicholas, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Century and other foremost periodicals of the time.
Marie Fraser reports that, although John Fraser fell off a cliff at the back of the Parliament Building, he in fact died at age 61 by accidental drowning in Ottawa, Canada, on June 7, 1872.
