Alexander born in 1849 was Duke of Fife and Earl of Macduff and became Lord Lieutenant of the county of London.
Macduff fled to the court of Siward, Earl of Northumbria, where he represented to Macbeth’s cousins, sons of the late Duncan, King of Scots, that the time was ripe for them to secure possession of their father’s throne.

He is the Thane of Fife, and flees to England to Malcolm, the son of King Duncan when he suspects that the king was slain by Macbeth.
He later fights Macbeth during a war to take back the throne; it has been prophecied that Macbeth cannot be killed by any "man of woman born," but Macduff reveals he was born by caesarean section, and kills him.
While being a fictional character, the MacDuff Clan were the most powerful family in Fife in the medieval ages.

In 1735 he was raised to the peerage with an Irish title as Baron Braco of Kilbryde, and in 1759 he was promoted to be Viscount Macduff and Earl Fife, which titles, although in the Irish Peerage, appeared to reinforce the family’s claims to descent from the Macduff Earls of Fife.

Because of the royal tribal preeminence of the North Gaels, clans representative of other ethno-tribal groups sometimes tried to affect genealogical connection to their sacred ancestral tribal stem as a kind of 'social climbing', but only the unstudied were fooled by these generally half-hearted attempts.
The MacKintoshes, who inherited the chiefship of the Clan Chattan, are a branch of the Clan MacDuff (see under MacKintosh), as are the MacBuffs (MacDuibh), barons of Fandowie in the Strathbran district of Perthshire (a position they held as late as 1602).
Other clan groups emerge which derive their identity more clearly from the original people of the land of the traditionally Pictish areas, and such professed or unprofessed affiliations, when considered in the context of Gaelic society, show fairly clearly how such groups saw themselves or were seen by others in terms of their ethnical affiliations.

Benton was the Chief of Clan Gordon in New York.
Eventually, Clan Gordon of New York, the 227th clan formed under the banner of The Order of Scottish Clans, ceased to exist and the pipe band became sponsored by The Clan MacDuff of Long Island, New York.
Out of respect for the original highland regiment and the predominance of Gordon clansmen in the original band, the band's title has always had the word Clan in front of it.
