The Maclay or Macleay Clan was formed by the descendents of Dunsleeve c.
Great MacLea, who possessed at the same time a large extent of property in the parish (Contin) and who was wont in the seasons of danger to retire to the island as a place of refuge from his enemies.
I suspect the Maclay Clan is smaller and less well known than other Scottish clans not so much because of their losses in battle, but because of this wanderlust.

Alistair Livingstone of Bachuil on his well deserved recognition as Head of the Clan MacLea and on his splendid new matriculation.
The article made me wonder as to name and arms and past instances (which do not readily spring to mind although I can research them if needs be) where the heir to a House or Chieftaincy could not take the honour/arms until or unless the "name" was resumed.
In this case, I understand that the name MacLea was dropped in favour of Livingstone due to "political" expediancy many years ago.

Others have beaten the Scottish surname issue into the ground, but I will point out that Maclay is a perfectly valid name without all the sexual wordplay baggage.
The Maclays are members of Clan Stewart, and there are many variations on the name within the clan (including Maclea, Macleay, Macleigh, etc. etc.) A senator from Pennsylvania in the 1800's, an American romance novelist, and a prominent modern-day barrister all share the name.
I've got a clan tartan around here somewhere...
