It has the grave of Donald Livingstone who saved the banner of the Stewarts of Appin, a yellow saltire on a blue background, from sharing the fate of the other clan colours which in 1746 were burned at the Mercat Cross in Edinburgh.
The Stewarts of Fasnacloich were descended from the fourth son of Alan Stewart, third of Appin, who with his five sons fought for his king at Flodden.
Dugald Stewart's son, Duncan was given the lands of Glenure and Glencoe by the King.

One family of Stewarts are descended from a natural son of Robert II., and there are two Stewart families that seem to be connected with the Stewarts of Appin who were a younger branch of the Stewarts before the senior line succeeded to the Throne.

The Appin Stewarts, the West Highland branch of the royal surname Stewart, descend from Sir James Stewart of Perston, 4th son of Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl, second son of Alexander, the 4th High Steward of Scotland.
The battle solidified Dugald's claim to Appin and the surrounding area which was formally granted to him by King James III on the 14th of April 1470.
The Chiefs family would like it to be no more contact group for the many dispersed Appin clansmen and clanswomen around the world so that we may all stay in closer contact with one another and so that we can all share in our clan's heritage and traditions.

In 1519 Duncan Stewart of Appin and Sorley MacColl, his Gille-cas-fluich, were murdered by the Macleans whilst guests at Duart and their bodies left hanging from the battlements.

During the efforts of King James IV and V to subdue the MacDonald Lord of the Isles, Duncan Stewart of Appin built Castle Stalker on an island called the Rock of the Cormorants (which was also the battle cry of the Stewarts of Appin).
The Stewarts and the neighbouring Campbells were frequently in dispute but in 1620 the castle was sold to the Campbells but the Stewarts got it back after a long siege in 1685.
The clan chief sold the castle in 1765 as the clan system declined after the 1745 Jacobite Uprising.

The assassination of Campbell of Calder, guardian of the young Earl of Argyll, in February 1592, caused a feud between the Stewarts of Appin and the Campbells, the effects of which were long felt.
On the death of David, without issue, February 22d, 1371, the steward, who was at that time fifty-five years of age, succeeded to the crown as Robert II, being the first of the family of Stewart who ascended the throne of Scotland.

There had been wolfish feuds about lands between the Stewarts of Appin and the Macleans of Duart.
On arrival at Duart, it was found the Macleans had arranged sports for the entertainment of their guest, the Stewart.
Livingstone and his daughters miraculously managed to 'bring the body of the Lord of Appin to their skiff, and to put to sea before they were discovered, but they had hardly left the shore when the Macleans came rushing down with wild tumult and wilder imprecations.

The only other significant battle that affected the MacIntyres directly was at Culloden in 1746 where ten MacIntyres were killed or wounded as part of the Stewart of Appin regiment that supported Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Although the MacIntyre Chiefs were recognized by other Clans and by the Kings of Scotland, it was only in 1991 that the Lyon Court of Scottish Heraldry gave their recognition to James Wallace MacIntyre of New York, the tenth Chief of Record.
It is Donald, the grandson of Sommerled, who is the progenitor of Clan Donald.

They led bands of wild Rannoch tribesmen on cattle raids far and wide and one of them, Neil Stewart, who lived at Garth, by some means or other acquired more land in Rannoch.
Later Stewarts occupied the land at the east end of the loch, called Bun-Rannoch.
