 Common Goldeneye — Birdhouse Network
In flight, the large white wing patches are highly visible, but more often the Common Goldeneye is identified in flight by the high whistling sounds made by its wings.
clangula (CLANG-u-la) is a reference to this phenomenon, which also gave rise to its colloquial name, the “whistler”.
Male juveniles can be mistaken for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, but the ranges of these two ducks don’t usually overlap.

The Common Goldeneye is one of the ducks most often seen in winter on bodies of fresh water in Quebec.
In an almost theatrical performance, the male tilts his head back, puffs out his chest, and then in a darting movement, throws his head forward, sticking his neck out and pointing his bill to the sky.

Birds from Scandinavia and western Russia overwinter throughout much of Britain (5), arriving from August and departing in February and March (3).
There are two subspecies; the form that occurs in Eurasia (Bucephala clangula clangula) and a North American subspecies (Bucephala clangula americana).
The Eurasian subspecies has a wide breeding distribution extending through northern Eurasia (4).
