RSG: Features: Deep level shelters in London
The Board then urged the government to open the shelters to relieve the strain on the tube stations, but the Cabinet were alive to the great cost of maintaining the deep shelters once they were opened and decided to keep them in reserve pending an intensification of the bombing.
Stockwell was available from July 9th 1944, Clapham North from July 13th, Camden Town from July 16th, Clapham South from July 19th and Belsize Park from July 23rd.
Regular shelterers at nearby tube stations and homeless people were given admission tickets, but demand was not high and by September some of the spaces available were made available to troops on leave.

Affectionately known as 'the Tube', it covers 620 square miles of the city with over two hundred and fifty miles of track, making it the world's largest urban railway network.

 The Underground at War
Built beneath the existing LNER surface rail station of the same name, "Highgate" was unfinished at the start of WW2, and was used as a public ARS during the Blitz, before being opened in an incomplete state 19/09/41 (on the same day the existing Tube "Highgate" Tube station was renamed "Archway").
The latter station closed 31/03/14 and the current site 250m to the north of the original and just 200m from "Wood Lane (Exhibition)" (as it still was) opened the next day, as did the new "Goldhawk Road", just south of the named thoroughfare.
Despite this, the surface building survived the war intact and is currently in commercial use, although there is simmering speculation that York Road could be resurrected to serve the planned Kings Cross international rail terminal, as it will be located to the north of the existing surface station.

Clapham North is the quietest end, though it does have a tube and train station, it's probably the cheapest part as it's quite near to some bad areas, but don't let that put you off.
Clapham Junction is probably a bus ride away from the others, and has not got a tube, but a good train station.
Clapham South - tube station with a few shops, best part is live is here on Clapham South Side, or nearby.

Thirty seconds from Clapham North tube station this Victorian boozer, with it's central bar, lofty ceiling and mosaic tables fits perfectly alongside similar Clapham pubs that refreshingly leave the TV’s and slot machines for others.
The huge windows complete with pull down blinds allow one to survey the goings on the high street whilst sipping on reasonable cocktails or munching on the increasingly popular Thai dishes (Green Curry and rice £7).

Knowhere: Clapham Eating and Drinking, Pubs, Cafes, Coffee Shops and Restaurants
The Circle bar, in between Clapham North and Stockwell on the corner of Union Rd. It may be a bit poncy but it's my local and they do good food.
The Railway is now my local having just moved to Clapham North and although the food is suprisingly tasty though a bit leftfield for my western tastes, the service is atrocious, moody, incompetent, slow, disinterested, self absorbed.
The pub mentioned in the Clapham Old Town with the sailor dummy atop it is the Prince of Wales and the govenor of the establishment is a colourful local character by the name of Alex who has been there since the times before Clapham was trendy.

And when there's a tube station called Royal Oak, we simply had to find out if it was an area infested with god-awful boozers.
Truth be told none of the areas served by this section are places where any of us choose to spend entire evenings drinking, but tube lines lend themselves to easily-organised crawls and most stations have a pub very close by.
