Clapstick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Clapstick is an instrument that traditionally accompanies the didgeridoo.
A clapstick is also a piece of equipment used in the motion picture industry to signal a synchronization point on film and audio track.
Since the audio is often recorded separately, the clapstick snapping shut is used to provide a single spot in the film where there's a distinct noise and a visual cue (the closed clapstick) to put the two tracks together.

Determinants of Didjeridu Style in Traditional and Popular Yolngu Song
Together with the singer's voice and clapsticks, the didjeriduist establishes the rhythmic foundation of the verse.
The clapstick pattern appropriate to both the act of gunbur'yun and the immediately preceding sung verses is called yindi bilma ('biglimportant clapsticks') and consists of rapid, unpattemed beating.
The didjeridu and clapsticks would assume this role in clan song performance, but in the pop/rock context - particularly in sections where the bass guitar and lower-pitched drums are prominent - the didjeridu is relegated to a less central role within the ensemble.

If the camera is more modern, matching (jam sync’d) timecode may or may not be recorded on the film by means of in-the-camera keycode and an Aaton master clock module.
A Denecke slate is filmed at the head of each scene, displaying a visual timecode as well as providing an old fashioned clapstick marker.

And the three ubiquitous symbols for the motion picture -- the reel, the clapstick and film itself, with those little square sprocket holes running along its edges -- will all be anachronistic, referring to a forgotten technology, like the carpenter's adz and awl.
By way of comparison, Gutenberg's first Bible was printed on vellum, a beautiful and tactile organic substance; but printing only really took off with the invention of paper, which was cheaper and easier to manufacture.
